I was lucky enough to attend Taylor Swift's concert at Gold Country Casino on May 30, 2007. This was the second of two sold out shows at the venue, and after seeing Taylor headline her own show, I saw why this young star is so popular. I see you removed my comments as to what I thought of Taylor’s lame concert. What is the point of having a comment section or is it only for those that agree with you.
Tayloe put on one of the most boring concerts I’ve ever been to and were talking over 20 years here. Her singing left me wondering how this amateur even got a recording contract unless long blonde hair is all it takes nowadays.
Having heard Taylor’s cd I can understand why Taylor has said her next one will be much much better as this one is about as lame as it gets.
That’s my opinion, if you don’t like it, too bad. It’s not going to change.

I don’t see what is so great about this girl. She’s cute, but nothing esle. She really can’t sing at all. I guess it’s really easy to get a country contract if you’re cute and write stupid superficial songs. This is just my opinion, I’m not hating.
I think it’s GREAT when they find someone young who can sing, but this girl CANNOT SING!! If noone has noticed she can’t carry a tune in a bucket!! She is a pretty girl, but NOT a SINGER. I promise I’ll get my hearing checked if others don’t agree with me!! I thought Lea Ann Rhimes was and is a good singer and thought it was nice a young person like her could sing, but Taylor’s parents must have connections in Nashville!!! -jc
She is the worst singer I have ever heard! Its unbelievable that she is as popular as she is. She won’t be 17 forever and she will have to own it soon enough–Its a matter of time. Radio stations are talking as if next year she will be female vocalist–over Carrie Underwood…SHUT UP–are you kidding me? There are many GREAT female vocalist who have never won that award (Trisha, Lori M., Sara Evans, If they give it to her I swear I might go nuts on someone!
Taylor Swift CAN NOT Sing! Do the Country Music (CMT) Think they can pull that over on the fans. This truth is going to come out everytime she opens her mouth. Any half ass vocalist knows she sucks.
The bottom line is that she really cannot keep on pitch. But studios can fix anything. The problem is live performances. Her real gift is that she writes catchy tunes with lyrics a kid her age can identify with. She definitely has the body and stage presence but the voice is just not there. Her future success all depends on writing or if she can make the move in another direction…Hollywood. Her shows seem to depend on gimicks. First the jeweled guitar and then “Flashdance”
revival. I guess the future is yet to see……but I would love to have her opportunities.
Taylor Swift is “all show and no go”. She simply cannot sing! She’s simply fortunate enough to have beauty to carry her through. As for the argument that she’s only 18, well, maybe should have waited until she grew up before she started her career.
If you want to hear someone who has looks AND an awesome voice, check out Katrina Elam. Unfortunately, she refuses to sell herself out, so Universal-South has been jerking her around. I’ve heard her unreleased album, as well as numerous new demos and, believe me, the girl’s HOT!!
Look losers…she has a different style than others…for her it works. Get a life!!
BTW, I’m pretty sure even your cheap-ass radios have an “off”…or at least the ability to change the channel. SUCK IT!!
Taylor is not only naturally beautiful but she also has tons of talent…whoever says she doesn’t obviously doesn’t know much. I have been to one of her concerts and it was an absolute blast. She has a great voice and writes songs that relate to a lot of teens! I look up to Taylor Swift and think she is a smart, down-to-earth ,and all around a gifted teen!!! Keep up the GOOD work!
Taylor is a great songwriter and has a great personality. But she is young and can’t really sing that well yet. Teens relate to her because of her songs and the thought they she is someone like them doing well. Brett Manning of “Can you Duet” fame gave her some voice lessons so evidently someone with her label knew she needed some help. But she is young and hopefully, she will “learn” to sing on pitch.
I know exactly how she got a recording contract. I got it from a reliable course. Her dad sunk 3 million dollars into it. Of course she got a contract. And then go into the studio and work the pitch correction machines overtime to make her sound good. Let her try to do it like Haggard did it. 2 takes and if it didnt work, it didnt make it to vinyl. I know of many singers around the Nashville area and there are TONS much better than Swift. She will die out. The labels are now looking for young female singers. You will see some soon that will blow Swift off the map.
WELL, here is my opinion –
Taylor Swift is a beautiful girl, with an awesome personality. She’s one of the most down-to-earth celebrities I’ve ever heard of.
She writes awesome songs, and to those of you who are wondering how much she contributes, she wrote many of her songs by herself, including the number one hit, “Our Song.”
If you’ve ever seen Taylor interact with her fans, then you would understand why she is where she is. She’s the best with her fans since Garth Brooks, and she TRULY cares for them.
Unfortunately, Taylor isn’t a good singer, at all. It has nothing to do with her age…I’ve heard many young kids who have unbelievable voices. She just CAN NOT SING.
I do feel though, that she has everything except the voice, and I am definitely rooting for her in this business and I hope she keeps doing as well as she is now.
Also…her dad didn’t pay the label to sign her ;] Scott Borchetta saw her playing at the Blue Bird Cafe in Nashville and saw something different in her. Obviously, he was right, considering she has gone triple platinum.
Taylor Swift is just one of a group of helium-breathing, low-rider pants wearing, bottle-blond, airhead, teen-bopper, recording company created products. She’s the leading edge of the ‘bubblegum pop’ of country music.
Can we find someone who’s using their real hair color and has a voice with some depth and dimension to it? Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood aren’t so bad.. Past that, the recording companies are pushing the envelope — in the wrong direction.
Get rid of the bubblegum, and get rid of the peroxide.. Maybe they can sign more folks from Nashville Star and Can You Duet??
Taylor Swift sucks. She is a shake and bake star created by the establishment. She is a pretty face and young, which will attract young kids to country music. Puhleeeze. Every time I hear her crap on the radio I change the station. Same thing with Miranda Lambert or whatever her name is.
I saw Taylor Swift at the CMAfest in Nashville in June. At first I thought I may have been the only one who heard several flat notes during her performance. It appears she is little more than heavy duty ‘industry’ packaging. Hopefully her vocal abilities will improve.
Well, I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who thinks Taylor Swift cannot sing. She would have been kicked off American Idol in the first audition, it just blows my mind. To me it’s really indicative of where country music is going. It seems all you need are looks and personality (sometimes). There is some phenomenal talent in this industry…I just dont know where she fits into that. (Right along with Miley Cyrus…omg…but that’s a whole other rant)

Taylor seems like a nice enough girl, but if I’m honest, I’d have to say she really can’t sing. It’s almost awkward when she sings live. Very pitchy. Whoever said she would be kicked off American idol in the first round, is right I think. She should have just been a song writer for young singers and left the singing to them. Why is she winning all of these awards???? She can’t sing. I think Carrie Underwood has it all. She’s cute, she can write songs(on her new album) and the girl has an amazing voice.
Damn you ppl! Im about to drop 400 bucks to see this chick w/the rascal flats as a present to my roomate..and then i read this! Okay so personal preferences aside…is it a good LIVE show? I can handle flat notes and a few eff ups..but is it something I will genuinley enjoy ( as a current fan) also a fan who will surely be drunk.Or will I be buzz killed and no longer like her?
I try to listen to Taylor and give her the benefit of the doubt and she is pretty but she is not even an average singer. I hear singers at home here in Asheville NC who are much better. Ginny McAfee leaves her in the dust! Sorry Taylor. You are a nice person though.
She was boo’d in California! Thats what she deserves! Now she knows that people hate her stupid lil voice. She was the biggest waste of my time but Rascel Flatts made up for it.

she sux. saw her with George Strait, and the biggest appause of the night came when she exited the stage. She chatted on and on and on about stupid things like high school boyfriends and kid stuff. The audience was not amused. Her jokes were lame, her conversation was stupid, and her music was not good. Plus, she looked like an ostrich with a mop on its head. Plain and simple…SHE SUCKS

Hey Cindy, I heard about her getting boo’d! She acts like she’s the greatest singer ever but she’s the worst singer. Even worst than Hilary Duff and Britney Spears.
She is probably a very nice person, but you can’t teach someone to sing in pitch. You have to be able to hear that your pitch is off. If you could hear that, you would sing in key. Age has nothing to do with that. Her voice will mature, but it will be a more mature tone that is off pitch. It’s a shame but that’s the truth. I know she has millions of fans. If they enjoy her, more power to them. There are a lot of tone deaf people out there. I am not saying that to insult anyone. It’s just a fact. It doesn’t make you less of a person. It WOULD make you a less talented singer. She is unable to stay on pitch in a live show. She sounds great on the radio, but she just can’t cut it live.
I’m not trying to be cruel, Taylor just cannot sing. Her immature, squeaky little voice grates on my nerves. Her pronunciations sound FAKE, like she’s trying to “sound country”, and so CUTE it is sickening. Like so many of todays country singers (eg. Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland) she is trying way to hard to sound country. It’s either natural or it’s not. Quit faking it, just be yourself. And as for her pitch, wow, it is just awful. I even hear her missing notes on RECORDINGS. That is next to impossible today with all the pitch correction technology. As for live performance I don’t know what else you can say. She sounds like your average karaoke singer in a bar on Tuesday night. Looks: I see 100 teenage girls every day who blow her away. She is just average. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? With so many unbelievably talented artists in Nashville alone? If you don’t believe me just go there on any weeknight and go into any bar in town. You will hear dozens of artists who smoke her. She is just another “Superstar” being forced down our throats by radio and record companies. Along with Kenny Chesney, et……… If you want to hear REAL music go out and support your local artists who are playing live.
Taylor Swift is an absolute joke of a singer. The only reason she has been able to stay on the radio is because of these little school girls think she is cool even though she has a horrable voice and poor stage presence. She is constantly off key, and can’t maintain a note without having a shakey voice. I would love her to go away forever. There are way to many great singers out there that could take here place. American Idol has done a pritty good job of providing us with some great country singers. Whoever discovered Taylor (and I use the word discovered very loosly) did an injustice to the music world. Go Away!!!!!!

I just watched Taylor Swift on the 2008 CMA’s. I have seen her sing a few times on TV and was trying to figure out how she made it that far. She cannot sing. Even my daughter, who likes her, finally had to admit that she cannot sing.
I Googled “Taylor Swift can’t sing” and found this discussion. I am glad to see that many other people feel the same way.
She reminds me of Pia Zadora, many years ago, who won an Academy Award for “acting”. It came to light that her husband had “invested” (to the right people) millions to get her there. She soon faded away.
Give Taylor a TV sitcom to take advantage of her popularity with kids and get her out of the singing business. There have to be hundreds of diserving young girls who can actually sing who would give anything to get an opportunity like Taylor’s.

I watched, for the first time, the CMAs from beginning to end. While I actually LIKE Taylor Swift’s songs…..she can’t sing live. Her songs are great and are perfect for her age group, which happens to be major players in music buying these days. In the studio, they can make her sound wonderful. But live, uh, not so much. I liked the song she sang on the CMAs and I think she’s a beautiful woman. But the voice just isn’t there. I shouldn’t compare her to Carrie Underwood, but it wasn’t so long ago that Carrie was a 19 year old and I’m sure she could sing a whole lot better than Taylor. I say give Taylor some time to develop. If it isn’t there, maybe she might stick with song writing. They make a lot of money too!
Taylor Swift is amazing. Despite what all of you say about her “terrible voice” and “horrible stage presence”, she is my favorite. She is inspirational in every way. Just because her voice is shaky, and she possibly gets off key at times… DOESNT MEAN SHE HAS NO TALENT. Her songs are not meaningless, they are so incredibly relatable and real. Are you seriously trying to tell me that getting your heart broken by the love of your life is shallow, and stupid to write about.!? And over coming your fears, and taking revenge, and letting people know that theyre beautiful in every way..thats stupid crap too.? I own both Taylor Swift and Fearless. I bought them both the day they came out. I have seen her preform, and in my opinion; shes excellent all around. An amazing singer, an excellent song writer, a role model, and a great preformer.

Just saw this twig of a girl on the AMA’s. From the first note it’s obvious this girl CAN NOT SING PERIOD. I would really like to know the ages of the people on here who say she’s a great singer. I would probably bet that they are under 20. Carrie Underwood is a real country singer. Heck Jessica Simpson blows this girl out the water. I saw her on Crossroads where she butchered my favorite Def Lepperd songs… She stunk on the CMAs, but even though her singing was awful, at least she was using her fake twang on her own songs… Crossroads was unbearable… Nasal twang & Def Lepperd songs are incompatible…

Taylor swift is a very pretty and I assume a very nice little girl and thats about it I have seen her on numerous TV shows and the girl cannot sing ! Recently on the grammy concert she really stunk the place up ! Taylor is a product of todays marketing which tells young people what they should think and what they should like. Even if personally they should not like something down deep inside they keep it covered up for fear of not being part of the collective conscinceness,ergo if they don’t like it ther must be something wrong with them.Thank god all the good music was written and recorded from the 50’s to the 70’s otherwise we would only hve the garbage that is foisted on the public today as talent.There is some genuine talent out there,but sorry Taylor, you do not number among them.

I must join the ranks of those who say that Taylor Swift cannot sing; oh my God…she’s horrible. Listening to her is like listening to nails being drawn across a chlakboard. Everytime I hear her mentioned in the same breath as Carrie Underwood, I cringe. Underwood is class and elegance and talent, while Swift is bubble gum, flat notes and teen angst, set in a cyber world of pimples and pathos. Taylor…keep writing, but do us all a favor and stop singing!

Taylors voice on her recordings is saturated with a pitch correction program. It’s call Antares Autotune. (Google it) It’s also called the “Cher” effect. All studios use it on vocal tracks today. If used the right way it can enhance a vocal track and if you don’t have great pitch it can make you sound like you do. Taylors vocals are so overdone with it I can’t stand to listen to her.
I totally agree. I have often told my husband that she sounds like someone at a karaoke bar. If you take away the face and just listen to the music, not sure why she is making millions. I can just barely hold a tune and I sound just as good. Sex sells and unfortunatly others that do have that talent but not the look don’t always make it.

Her voice seems to crack every time she changes pitch. And it’s very… weak and breathy. Sometimes I think the microphone is just not turned up high enough, but that shouldn’t be left up to technicalities all the time!
And as for her song writing… I suppose it does relate to most teenagers well, but it’s really superficial and have absolutely no substance.

All you folks who think this young lady is “awesome” etc. need to stay away from anything that looks like “Kool Aid”. She can’t sing period.
I love Taylor.. its can be pretty extreme how much devotion fans will have to someone they don’t know, but this young lady opens up her life to all of her fans. She treats them with the utmost respect and as far as I know she would never turn someone down for an autograph. On the other hand, her singing abilities aren’t the best. She sounds great on her CDs and I have every single song she has ever made because I love the songs she writes. but…. i agree that she isn’t the best singer- she just can’t reach those high notes like artists such as Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride. It wasn’t until one of my friends who is a recording artist in Nashville heard from a very reliable source that Taylor’s dad paid freakin THREE MILLION DOLLARS to a record company for her to get a contract, and that when she records, the pitch and clearity has to be adjusted to an extreme. I’ve never seen her live, but from what I hear I never want to now. It just kind of sucks to see that someone I admired didn’t even earn her way up there.. it was paid for. Especially since there’s so many starving and very talented music artists that would give their right arm to be in her shoes. but thats just my opinion.
Well i would just like to thank Taylor Swift for showing all of the people out here that have little or no talent that you really don’t need that much talent to succeed after all.

1st noticed the pop-influence in country ~around mid 90’s…”crossover-country”. Now I SWEAR you could replace the fiddles on Shania Twain’s last album w/ guitars & you’d damn near have a Def Leppard record. Bon Jovi figured it out didn’t they w/ their song “Who says u can’t go home?”. Country music was ALWAYS the last bastion of REAL talent. Lyrics were clever word-play woven into fables for adults. A good example is Julie Roberts’ “Sure hate to break down here” Country was where you HAD to have REAL talent! Country-labels figured-out the same marketing that brought us POISON & Brittny, which is to FOCUS ON KIDS! Their income is ENTIRELY expendable AND they have slowly been transformed into the world’s GREATEST CONSUMER. They are 100% effected by the influence of media so you can just SHOWthem what is cool (via a video) then SELL it to them. Just pay $$$ to get your video on TV and these dumb kids (like “cheerleader” who posted earlier) will figure the product MUST be good if it’s on tv…then they buy it. This is the same emperor’s new clothes that pop-music has been exploiting for years…very sad for country!
Taylor Swift is proof of the magic that can be made in a recording studio. That same magic can’t be done live. She is a terrible singer, no debate needing, she flat out can’t sing live.
And…the latest fad for singers are those “in-ear” monitors that are fitted for your ears just like a hearing-aid. Singers USED to hear themselves from those speakers on the floor. It was always hard to get those loud enough without feeding-back. Also u had to stand in that spot to be able to hear yourself (to stay in-key). We bought some in-ears so we could move-around onstage & because the floor units always sucked. There are problems with the in-ear systems: Your voice is isolated and you cannot really tell HOW you are pronouncing (”inflecting”) the words. The best way to describe it is you start to talk/sing like Lou Ferrigno…all you can hear is your head-voice. To see what I mean COMPLETELY block your ears now & try to talk or sing. You cannot tell how you are pronouncing words, you CANNOT hear if you’re in-key (even w/ an instrument mixed into the ear). What you SHOULD be noticing MOST in live performances over the last 8 years is how lots of singers never open-up & sing LOUD. That is because they hear only themselves…AND because they can hear themselves so-well they THINK they are singing louder than they are. Watch & see.

Ok, so Taylor Swift is cute and sweet. SHE CANNOT CARRY A TUNE IN A BUCKET!!! Last year at the New york tree lighting, I watched her and was embarrassed in my own living room. She sounded awful. This year in New York at New Year’s, she was awful!!! It amazes me how so many younger girls don’t know good voices. No wonder American Idol has all of these people who think they can sing, but sound awful. If Taylor had auditioned for American Idol she would not have gone on to Hollywood.

You people don’t even understand my frustration. I KNEW Taylor Swift’s family before the girl ever became famous. I stood there and watched helplessly as my daughter and her friends tried out for musicals and plays and all the lead parts went to Taylor.
It frustrated the hell out of all the moms, especially Tracey (who is a close family friend of ours). Tracey’s daughter is a professionally trained Broadway singer with an insane voice that literally gives me chills every time I hear it. Did she get the lead parts in musicals, the parts she deserved? NO! They all went to Taylor, the girl with the hopelessly weak, wavery warble of a voice who can barely stay on pitch live and is constantly flat and off-key! IT WAS RIDICULOUS!
You cannot even imagine how pissed off all the other mothers and I were about this situation. Taylor got attention because she was a tall willowy blonde twig with an overly-cute personality, and that still seems to work for her somehow.
I am so utterly disgusted by her popularity that I can barely even type about it. The Swifts were rich before all this, and they’re even richer now. The Swift kids have always been spoiled. Taylor does NOT deserve all the hype and recognition that she receives. Well if you ask me she is singing in the wrong genre of music. Her voice can’t really carry a tune, possibly because of her breathing, but it does have a lot of energy behind it and she can write very good music. I think alternative or rock might be her forte.

Well I wish I had seen this forum before I bought tickets to her concert… I love both of her albums (and just for the record, I’m 21 years old) but I’ve gone back over her performances and I hate to say this… but I agree with most of the people on here. She’s pitchy and shaky not to mention she has absolutely no projection. I think most of her fans make excuses for her performance or just ignore them altogether and hero worship her despite it. It shows what a disgrace the music industry is now days when the people getting the recording contracts can’t actually sing live. Instead their tracks have to be digitally altered. It seems that image is far more important than talent these days. It’s happening with everyone, Miley Cyrus, Lindesay Lohan etc. Now P!nk, she is absolutely amazing live! Sounds exactly like she does on her albums.

Taylor Swift is exactly like the Jonas boys or Miley Cyrus a manufactured product for young girls to buy. don’t be stupid sir.
Okay. Truth be told, she is no more a singer than a lot of people who front rock bands. Problem is, she sings a genre and style of song that would be better suited to someone who can sing properly. Rock has wiggle room for talking and pitch issues - country (ballads especially) - not so much.
People (young girls) apparently relate to her because she really doesn’t sing much better than they do themselves. Interesting tactic. I personally like to hear people that take the voice to another level - almost as an instrument. Then again, I like jazz and classical; so maybe I’m missing something.
FOR THE TRAINED EAR - she is undeniably WEAK with BREATH CONTROL and PITCH. This is evident in every live performance I have caught. In fact, her poor breathing and phrasing could be adversely affecting her ability to stay on pitch.
It’s nice to be a fan and root for someone, etc. But please don’t insist that she’s more than a half decent singer. On singing ability alone, she’s in the middle of the pack for any junior high choir. Real voice lessons would be a huge help.
I am so pleased to have found this thread (I got to it searching ‘Taylor Swift can’t sing’). It is so refreshing to see that many people see right through all this and unfortunately, the industry will suffer serious credibility issues on the long run (they are now). Miranda C. (80) … if the story you tell is even half true, that explains a lot. There are way too many capable and deserving singers out there to see this happening. As I watch the 2009 ACMs (why, I’m not sure), I can’t help but thinking that McDonald’s sells 100s of millions of Big Macs every year - that doesn’t mean they’re good or good for you.

Of course, Paula Abdul and Bob Dylan singing abilities are questionable too. Maybe Taylor can be an American Idol judge some day. Paula actually never toured after her hugely successful first album. Think they tried to set one up, but then cancelled it.
I listened to some Taylor samples on itunes. She’s in tune on her recordings. Likely autotuning, or she sang the songs line by line over and over again until she got each line right, or mostly right, then autotune. Can do magic in the recording studio. Can even make Clint Eastwood sound like he can sing.
Being able to sing is not a requirement to be hugely successful in the music biz. So I don’t find her success surprising.
Some have called her ugly. That’s just odd. She’s anything but ugly, she’s really cute.
I wouldn’t call her a horrible singer, but as a vocalist she’s pretty mediocre. As a pop music celebrity packaged for the masses, obviously it’s working. I’d be surprised if her singing career goes the distance if she doesn’t improve a lot. Of course, there’s always modeling and acting and songwriting.
After last night’s CMA on TV I googled this site too. I just couldn’t believe that she is put right up there with Underwood. It is embarassing and degarding to Underwood to be sharing the limelight. By far THE BEST country music channels in existence, who play nothing but real, true, down-to-earth, honest-to-God country music all day and night. You’ll NEVER dare hear Taylor Swift or anyone like her on these stations.

After hearing her live, I suspect the talent is not especially there. tech wizards know there stuff of how to fix vocals. Yes, and that’s the sad truth with a lot of modern day country music…it’s terrible. Thankfully, though, there ARE artists out there who are still recording in the same tried and true traditional country format that so many of us grew up listening to. These would include artists like Jamey Johnson, Jamie Richards, Sunny Sweeney, Amber Digby, Heather Myles, Grandstaff, Justin Trevino, Curtis Potter, Tony Booth, Dallas Wayne…just to name a few. Look them up (most of them, if not all, have Myspace Music pages), or tune your satellite radio to Willie’s Place (XM 13 / Sirius 64) and you will hear many of them and so much more. Nothing but REAL country music 24/7. Awesome.

Hi, I don’t mean to be a basher, but I heard Taylor live on the Grand Ole Opry and her voice leaves much to be desired. Now this is coming from a person who can’t sing at all, and if her dream is to be an entertainer then I commend her for having the courage to pursue that. However, there are so many people waiting in the shadows trying so hard to get recording contracts and gigs at big venues that actually have talent and can sing really well. It makes you wonder if she is related to someone, or if she knows someone in an important place because with all the talent that’s trying to break out in country music I don’t think she got the contract with her voice. And yes, a she sounds fine in the studio, but the studio magicians can make anyone sound great.

I agree - Taylor Swift cannot sing - her voice is so weak and squeaky - while Carrie’s voice is strong and probably the best country singer out there. Carrie Underwood is good but barely a country singer that goes for most of the “country singers” popular today.
Why do you think there are people like Kid Rock,Taylor Hicks,Darius Rucker and the like coming over to country music.
I guess they can’t make it in top 40 music.
Amen, Dr. Evil! I actually liked her songs on the radio, and then I saw her live opening for Keith Urban. She was very heavy on the drama (flipping hair, dancing around, alright, it’s cute if you’re 13), most of her songs were about bashing ex-boyfriends, and she seemed to work the pre-teen/teen crowd into a frenzy! Her singing is even more flat live than in the studio. Don’t pay good money to see her if you want to be impressed by talent.
