Track of the Week: "He Stopped Loving Her Today"

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" appeared on George Jones' 1980 album I Am What I Am.

The song's mournful tale of love that never dies, and pain that never ends, became one of his quintessential recordings.

What did Jones think of it?

"When we first cut it, I thought it was too sad," he said. "Fans proved me wrong."

After a long dry spell, "He Stopped Loving Her Today" offered Jones his first number one in years. Since then, it's been covered by Johnny Cash, Faron Young, and Johnny Paycheck, among others.

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" was written by Curly Putnam and Bobby Braddock -- songwriters who also penned Tammy Wynette's "D-I-V-O-R-C-E."

Great song and post, you never know what becomes a hit and what won’t work until you try.

It was a great song.
I loved it but I loved Tammy as well.
It is just to bad that he could not stop drinking and beating her so bad that it caused the divorce she sang about, much less the pain that he felt by her death, that he could finally go on. When you lose someone you love, pain hurts when the truth comes out and can finally admit it?

“He Stopped Loving Her Today” is without a doubt my favorite George Jones song, and there are many greats to choose from. It is the epitome of a great country song. It is a song that anyone can relate to that has found the true love of their life. I listen to this song often, since my wife is my true other half and I can not imagine ever not loving her while I have breath in my body. This hit for George Jones hit all the right notes for a lasting hit. I was not a huge Jones fan until this song came out and then I started truly listening to his other music and became a George Jones fan for life.
