"On the Other Hand" was released by Randy Travis on his classic debut Storms of Life.
It's still one of the best country songs of the 1980s.
The tune tells the story of a married man trying to resist the lure of another woman. Like so many great country songs, it relies on a clever turning of a well-worn phrase to hammer home an emotional point.
"On the Other Hand" was written by Don Schlitz and Paul Overstreet, who later penned Travis' ubiquitous wedding song "Forever and Ever Amen." It was released as the first single off Storms of Life, but it didn't reach number one until after Travis' second single, "1982," took hold of listeners.
"On the Other Hand" went on to win Song of the Year at the 1986 Country Music Awards.
It continues to be music to the cash registers of wedding ring salesmen everywhere.
