Dwight Yoakam's rendition of "Rapid City, South Dakota" is the highlight of Why the Hell Not... The Songs of Kinky Friedman.
The album is of course a tribute to Friedman, country music's slyest satirist since Shel Silverstein. (Check out the cover to 1973's Sold American for a humorous sampling.)
"Rapid City, South Dakota" follows a country boy abandoning his lover, but without the usual country song claptrap (she's better off without me, et cetera).
Friedman puts it rather bluntly:
Well, he left her just a blanket of snow upon the farm
And that don't keep your conscience very warm
Indeed.
