Nobody can make the holidays depressing like Merle Haggard.
If this song is any indication, Hagg thinks that what people really want out of a Christmas song is a tale of heartache, unemployment, and existential misery.
Strangely enough, he was right. "If We Make It Through December" was a big hit for Haggard, shooting to number one in December of 1973 and topping the charts into the New Year.
