Country Song of the Week - 'If We Make It Through December'

By December 5, 2012

Follow me on:

Nobody can make the holidays depressing like Merle Haggard.

If this song is any indication, Hagg thinks that what people really want out of a Christmas song is a tale of heartache, unemployment, and existential misery.

Strangely enough, he was right. "If We Make It Through December" was a big hit for Haggard, shooting to number one in December of 1973 and topping the charts into the New Year.

(1) Becky Stockum says:

Merle is a REAL singer—a country singer—couldn’t make a bad song!! As opposed to someone like Taylor Swift—who is NOT a good singer & especially NOT a country singer & from all indications & media reports, is what us country folks would call a tramp—fall in instant love with this one, move on to the next one, etc., etc., etc.
