CMA 2003 Recap - Page 2

From Shelly Fabian, for About.com

Gary Allan - Songs About Rain

Gary Allan - Songs About Rain

Gary Allan performed "Songs About Rain"

The Hall of Fame ceremony was next. They showed clips of Floyd Cramer's careers, and then showed his family in the audience. Then, they showed clips of Carl Smith's career and then showed him in the audience. I thought they should have done a presentation since he was there. It's the Hall of Fame, for goodness sake. He deserved better than just to stand up and wave his hat.

Dierks Bentley performed a bit of his "What Was I Thinking?" to head out to the commercial. This was odd in that it was the only one all night. At least the only one I caught.

Darryl Worley was the third of the Horizon nominees to perform. He performed "I Will Hold My Ground."

Buddy Jewell was the last of the Horizon nominees to perform. He performed "Help Pour Out The Rain (Lacey's Song)"

Trace Adkins and Kellie Coffey presented the award for Vocal Group.

The award went to Rascal Flatts. When they accepted the award they thanked everyone, but said that if it wasn't for Alabama, they wouldn't be there, and they wanted to give the award to them. They showed Randy Owen in the audience, and he looked like he didn't really want to go up on the stage, but eventually he and Mark Herndon went up, but they didn't say anything. A commercial came on after that. It was very ackward.
They announced that before the show the award for Musician of the Year was given out, and the winner was Randy Scruggs.

Faith Hill presented the award for Female Vocalist.

The award went to Martina McBride.
Vince Gill performed "Young Man's Town" with daughter Jenny.

Jo Dee Messina and Tracy Byrd presented the Horizon Award.

The award went to Joe Nichols.
The Irving Waugh Award of Excellence was awarded to Johnny Cash, and after that, something I had been waiting for all night finally happened. The Tribute to Johnny Cash.

Participating in the tribute was Willie Nelson, who sang part of "I Walk The Line." Hank Williams Jr. sang part of "Ring of Fire." Sheryl Crow and Travis Tritt sang part of "Jackson." Kris Kristofferson sang part of "Folsom Prison." Lastly, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band sang "Will The Circle Be Unbroken." Everyone joined in on the last song. It was a nice Tribute, but somehow I felt it should have been longer or something.

The final award of the night was presented by George Jones. For some reason he didn't bother to read the nominees. He just told who won the Entertainer of the Year Award.

The award went to Alan Jackson.
Another CMA show is through, and while enjoyable, I still wished some of the results were different.

No one messed up too bad on performances, and no one dressed awfully, so that's a good thing. :D

Vince is a great host, but he seems to be getting tired of doing the show. He suggested maybe Alan Jackson can do it for the next 12 years.

No matter what bad things I might have said about the show, it's still 1000% better than watching the Grammy's or American Music Awards with all that rap music and stuff I don't care about. I think the show came off well.
