Clay Walker Concert Review

Even in the rain, you can still see the Alabama Clay

Clay Walker

Michael A.
Opening for Clay Walker, Margo Rochelle and Rodeo Drive were unknown to me, but not to the many fans who had followed them up from Florida, and I would soon know why they followed as Marge quickly proved herself to be an impressive vocalist. Margo performed hits from artists such as Hank Williams ("Jambalaya") and Trick Pony ("Pour Me") and was really getting into the swing of things when the sky opened up with a heavy summer downpour.

After a twenty-minute rain break, Margo and company returned and added some of her original songs to the set with "Lolita" and "Where a Cheatin' Heart Lies" both written by band member Robert Brake. She then closed her storm-shortened set with a tribute to the troops and a moving rendition of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA."

Another brief shower delayed Clay's set, which ended up starting about a half-hour late. But the wait was well worth it when Clay bounded onto the stage and went straight to singing familiar hits such as "Live, Laugh, Love" and "Rumor Has It."

Midway through his set, Clay played two singles from his soon-to-be-released album, A Few Questions, on RCA; the title-track "A Few Questions," (A great spiritually based tune) and the rocking showcase song "When She's Good She's Good" which really let the band cut loose and have some fun.

Next Clay and the band hit us with some heavy Bluegrass, as they gathered at the front of the stage to play "I'll Fly Away," a traditional bluegrass favorite, followed by Bill Monroe's classic "Uncle Pen." Switching gears, Clay sang "Drift Away" explaining that it was the song his Mom had played to teach him to dance.

With a wave from Clay, the security which had been keeping the crowd in their rows walked away and the many fans in attendance rushed the stage hoping for a handshake or a look as Clay belted out his hit song "This Woman and This Man." Afterwards, he left the stage to thunderous applause and screaming from his female fans.

Walker was energetic and entertaining and showed a mastery of each musical genre he choose to perform. If the hundred-degree heat or the constant threat of lightning bothered him it was not evident to this viewer. I saw a refreshed Walker, ready to make his come-back with a new CD on a new label, but with the same fans, and same great voice.

It may have been a while since I had last heard any new music from Mr. Walker, but it was clear by the crowd that his fans were still behind him, and even more clear by the new songs he sang that we'll be hearing a lot more from this superb country star.
