Guide Review - Population Me - Dwight Yoakam
Dwight Yoakam gets better with age. "Population Me" is Yoakam's first release on his new label imprint, Electrodisc, through his brand-new record label, Audium. "Population Me" is only ten tracks long, about 30 minutes, but does not come up short on value. This is pure entertainment. No one can do heartache like Dwight Yoakam; and he has an awesome talent for making some of the world's most mournful lyrics sound upbeat and catchy, mingling toe-tapping shuffles such as "I'd Avoid Me Too," with the unique blend of Dixieland jazz/honkytonk rhythms of the title track, "Population Me." Country just can't be country without a little real heartbreak, and Yoakam delivers. Dwight is unmatched at taking odd pop songs and making them tremendous country tunes, as he does with the Burt Bacharach oldie, "Trains and Boats and Planes." Dwight also delivers that unique brand of heartbreak in a good old-fashioned ballad style, as with the eloquent "Back Of Your Hand."
There's a great deal that can be packed into one ten-song package. Dwight Yoakam's never-subtle but always slightly intoxicating Kentucky voice hiccups and pops through good ol' hillbilly songs and croons with the velvet undertones of a smoky den on chocolate-rich ballads. Here's to the beginning of another 14 years of awesome entertainment.
