Guide Review - Essential Earl Scruggs - Earl Scruggs
The Essential recordings from Sony and Legacy Recordings are a great way for fans to get music that is often long out of print. This release from Earl Scruggs is no exception. Earl Scruggs can do things with a banjo that most people only dream of, and it is impossible to pick a favorite song. I've never had that trouble with an album before. There is always at least one song that stands out above the rest for me, but I just can't pick one here.Johnny Cash is guest vocalist on his song, "I Still Miss Someone," and Earl is his duet partner. The song starts off with a short speech by Johnny about how much he admires Earl Scruggs and what a great time he has when they get together and Earl lends his Banjo skills to one of Johnny's songs. A real toe-tapping gospel song is "I Saw The Light." The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Linda Ronstandt lend their talents to make one of my favorite gospel tunes even more special. Tom T. Hall sings lead vocals on "Song of the South." The Oak Ridge Boys, Rosanne Cash and Rodney Crowell can all be heard singing background vocals. All the Beverly Hillbilly fans will recognize "The Ballad of Jed Clampett." With the age of reruns, I can't imagine too many people who don't know and love that song.
Many of the songs are instrumental numbers. Your toes will be tapping from beginning to end and you will look up and wonder where the time went. It is just a terrific collection of music from a true bluegrass legend.
