Guide Review - Letters From Home - John Michael Montgomery

John Michael Montgomery has had many peaks and valleys in his eleven year career. When it seems like his career is coming to an end, he comes out with what many in the music business call “career songs.” The title track to “Letters From Home” is a great example of such a song. “Letters” is a timeless song about a soldier who is away from home and really relies on the periodic letters he receives to get through the ordeal.

“That’s What I’m Talking About” is a fun song that discusses current topics and the insanity of our insatiable appetites for stuff like American Idol and stargazing but finds JMM singing from a point of view that he’d rather spend time with his girl then partake in all that stuff. “Look At Me Now” is a wonderfully written ballad about how we often strive for success and greatness when greatness really is having a wonderful family, not a hot shot career or cool car. “Goes Good With Beer” is the perfect song to play at the end of a tough week. It’s a fun little ditty that describes all the various things that beer helps “fix.” Written by Billy Yates, “Break The Chain” tells an all to real tale of a man who is overcoming addictions to become a better man.

While “Letters From Home” is only 10 tracks long, the CD is one of John Michael Montgomery’s best albums yet. Packed with potential hits, and one “career song,” this CD is one that should be in the collection of any contemporary country music fan.
