Guide Review - Tougher Than Nails - Joe Diffie
Joe's music is firmly grounded in tradition and he sticks to music he believes in. He signed with Broken Bow after his contract with Sony expired in 2001. With his first Broken Bow release, Joe was able to take a more active role in his music. Several songs on the album are ones he has written or co-written. This is also the first album he was able to help produce. The result was one of the best country albums I've listened to in a long time. There are 12 tracks, and each one is solid. There are no weak links to be found anywhere on the album. "Tougher Than Nails" was the first release and is steadily climbing the charts. There is a good mix of tempos to keep the interest level high. There are some fun songs like "The More You Drink The Better I Look." It is a tongue in cheek about a pretty little lady drinking so much that by the end of the night he looks pretty good to her. It has an up-tempo beat and was written by Joe and Shawn Camp. George Jones appears on one of the cuts. It is a song about all the little last minute issues that happen before a show comes together. After they lament each issue they wonder, "What Would Waylon Do?" They decide he would kick in the doors, shoot out the lights and end up with a heck of a show no matter what. The deep south was visited with a song written by Craig Morgan and Phil O'Donnell. "My Redneck of the Woods" visits many of the things that make the south a unique place to live.
