Guide Review - Merlefest Live! - Various Artists

I'll admit it. When I first heard the term "Merlefest" my honky-tonk mind assumed Haggard. That's the wrong Merle. This festival is dedicated to the late Eddy Merle Watson, the son of legendary guitarist Doc Watson, who was killed in a tractor accident just days before being named Best Finger-Picking Guitarist of the Year 1985 by Frets Magazine. The festival began in 1988 to benefit Wilkes Community College in Wilesboro, NC. It remains a fundraiser for the college. Highlighting diversity in country & folk music, Merlefest brings together artists from all over the country to play on 13 stages for a 4-day run. "Merlefest Live!" spotlights a few gems for those who can't get to the live show.

Starting out with Asleep at the Wheel's performance of the classic "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," "Live!" shows how country music is many styles. From Texas swing to Bluegrass, from honky-tonk to old mountain music, there's a little bit of everything here and it's all performed incredibly, with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder on "How Mountain Girls Can Love" and a wow of a take on "An American Dream" by the original Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (including John McEuen).

From The Whites performing "San Antonio Rose" to Rhonda Vincent & The Rage on "Caught in the Crossfire," there's a track for everyone on this disc. Of course, Doc Watson himself performs, giving us both "Rollin My Sweet Baby's Arms" and "Match Box Blues." It's not quite as good as being there, but it comes close.
