Guide Review - Tangled in the Pines - BR549
Not knowing what to expect with the addition of Geoff Firebaugh & Chris Scruggs, first track "That's What I Get" drew me in with a sense of familiarity. Falling out of love once again is something the know-it-all says he deserves for thinking any one of his relationships wouldn't turn sour. "I'm All Right (For The Shape I'm In)" is something Chuck declares on the next track as he sings about how he is hanging in there even though he is "tired, torn, & tattered" from standing out in the rain. "Tangled In The Pines" has a guitar backbeat that makes the listener feel like they are riding around getting lost in thoughts about what is to come.
Not being good enough always happens to one country music hopeful in Nashville in "Movin' The Country," while "When I Come Home" is pure honky-tonk sounding like something Hank Williams, Sr. would have written & performed. Speaking of honky-tonk, "Honky Tonkin' Lifestyle" is about a man who tries to cure his hangover blues enough so he can go out at night & drink the time away yet again.
I liked BR549's previous album but I must admit that 'Tangled In The Pines' is a lot better in quality and sound. It is very apparent that all of the guys had a say in it which makes for an excellent album to have in any collection.
