Guide Review - Regard The End - Willard Grant Conspiracy

It's always an annoyance to me to run across a group that is brand-new to me simply because Americana can't get played in numerous parts of America. It was a kick in the teeth to find out this amazing group has been performing across the nation and in Europe for eight years, and "Regard the End" is their fifth album. I guess the best I can say is hooray, at last I've found them. Now I'm going to be paying attention, 'cause damn, this group's good.

WGC consists mainly of lead guitarist and vocalist Robert Fisher and any of a number of rotating members who join the group as they are available. Playing on this disc with Fisher are 18 musicians and singers who just plain know how to make good music. WGC is old-time music with a rich modern feel, with songs as diverse as the traditional lyrics "River In The Pines" to any one of Fisher's original ballads, each steeped in that same tradition.

It's not feel-good music, but it sinks into the soul like balm, anyway. The deeply emotional, heartfelt lyrics cut like a knife; the haunting melodies draw the wounds closed. It's unrelenting sorrow, ending with "The Suffering Song," yet somehow is still uplifting by the exquisite beauty of the music. Glorious.
