The Judds & Jo Dee Messina Concert Review

Introduction

Weekend and Concert Review

The tickets for The Judds Power to Change tour went on sale in December 1999. I was able to get through online and purchase two tickets for my mom and myself on the floor, about half-way back. We even had an isle seat. What a deal. I hate being sandwiched inside a huge row of people.

The night being rainy, we had our rain panchos with us, and I brought a pack to store them during the show. We dried them as best we could, then folded them and placed them in the bottom of the pack. I also carried my purse and our programs, as well as my digital camera, and disks in the bag. We reached our seats about 7:40 pm, and the show was to start.

The arena was filling up, but still not even 3/4 full. Did the rain keep some people away? The two seats in front of us remained vacant, and we crossed our fingers that no one would claim them so we'd have the best view of the stage.

The stage had a large screen behind it, and about 5 minutes before the show was to start, they ran a K-Mart commercial with Naomi and Wynonna in it. The crowd was loving it, and they screamed their approval. K-Mart is a sponsor of the tour.

Just a bit after 8:00 pm, the lights went down, and Jo Dee Messina, the 1999 CMA Horizon award winner took the stage. She wore her hair in long braids, which is very different from any way I've seen her wear her hair before. She started the show with a song from her upcoming CD. The song was called "Closer," I believe.

Jo Dee informed us that her sister was in the audience, and that she saw her wearing her hair in braids the night before, so she decided she'd try the hairstyle herself. She then launched into "I'm Alright," and had the audience on their feet clapping, dancing, and singing along.

The rest of her set list went as follows:

  • Stand Beside Me
  • Burn (new song)
  • Lesson in Leavin'
  • Because You Love Me
  • Saturday Night (new song)
  • Get Up and Dance (new song)
  • Bye Bye
  • Nothing I Can Do

Jo Dee has so much energy; she had the crowd going, and when she closed, she told us to stick around for her "heroes," the Judds. (Like someone would leave? ;))
