Independent music is an unknown commodity in Nashville these days. While there are some independent labels, a true independent artist self releases their stuff. Kenny Rogers has done it and so has Steve Wariner recently but they are about the only two to have any success at it. Quite simply, for an independent artist to have a hit song in Nashville they need to have some disposable income and a keen ability to write or select songs.
Tresa Street can write some good songs and knows a good lyric when she hears it. While the production of her sophomore album (titled Ain't Nothin' Changed) isn't the best at times, it does keep the focus of the music on her voice. Tresa is blessed with a voice that at times recalls Wynonna Judd and Reba while also keeping in a touch of Michelle Wright's vocal sense.
Tresa's first single "That's My Final Answer" is a pop-country confection that sounds like the best stuff that Michelle Wright released in the 1990's. Solely written by Tresa herself, The song is one of those that has a nice danceable beat and lyrics that won't take no for a final answer.
While Tresa's uptempo stuff sounds more like contemporary radio fodder, the ballads like "Nobody's An Angel" are delightful in their pure country sound. This song in particular sounds like something right off of a Tammy Wynette record.
"Rockin' A Baby" is a cute bluesy and lyrical ditty about the way a woman decides to stand up for herself. I can definitely see women like Bonnie Raitt and Wynonna wrapping their voices around a song like this. It's a song that makes a statement about women who are tired of men who don't hold their end of their bargain in a relationship.
I always though R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" could be a great country ballad and Tresa's version of it is good, but I can't help but wonder what Reba would do with this song. This is an inspirational song about believing in your own abilities to do whatever you want to do. This song (in its original form by the songwriter) was on the Space Jam movie soundtrack.
The title track, "Ain't Nothin' Changed" sounds like something that Trisha Yearwood could do well with it's a song about being happily in love the same way you were when you first met your spouse. It's got an infectious sound to it that will have you dancing.
Give Tresa Street a bigger budget and a better producer and she could record and release a wonderful album. She has a nice look and some nice songs along with an ability to pick good songs from other writers. Keep a look out for Tresa Street for she might become a star down the road.
