After listening to this CD, I don't know how you can label it. Billy Bob is all over the map musically. There is some spoken word songs, Bluegrass, Alt-Rock, folk, and even some straightforward love songs. The one constant on this CD are the strong lyrics. It isn't really hard to see how Billy bob has been nominated for an Oscar, (Slingblade), with his screenwriting talent. On "Angelina" one thing is clear, Billy Bob is professing his love to his wife, actress Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider). This is the most radio friendly song on the whole CD and one that could easily be covered by another artist. "Dark And Mad" is an interesting song. With a singing style similar to Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson, Billy Bob's gritty vocals tell a story of a man whose heart aches for his lost love. Written from a story about a relative of the late actor Jim Varney (the Ernest movies), "That Mountain" tells the story of a lady who lives in a holler and only wanted "to go over that mountain, to see what's on the other side, before the day that I die." Destined to become a bluegrass classic, this song could be played on Traditional Country radio stations. This is my favorite track on this CD. "Your Blue Shadow" is about a lonesome man who realizes that no matter where he goes his special lady is always with him. The music is very bluesy and accents Billy Bob's vocals quite well. "Lost Highway" is a remake of the classic Hank Williams song (and the name of the label Billy Bob records on). Featuring Hank's old steel guitar player, this version is a faithful remake. Nothing is changed. Along with Billy Bob's cover great of Roger McGuinn's, (no relation to Mark) "He Was A Friend of Mine," I'd like to hear Billy Bob record a whole CD full cover songs. If you are like me and you are the curious sort, then go grab this CD, I also recommend it to people who like Alternative Country Music as well. Song List:
