"Walk a Little Straighter" is the first hit single released from this debut offering by Billy Currington, and the album does much to meet the promises made by the quality of 'Walk..'
From the opening track "I Got A Feelin" to the closing beats of "Ain't What It Used To Be" Currington seems to be sending one message with this album: I'm all about country music. And the message is coming through loud and clear. There's no manufactured cross-over tunes, and no overly rocking fast numbers. This CD is everything I like about country music, and nothing I don't.
If Currington has one problem it's that he vocally has a tendency to sound like Kenny Chesney at times, but he overcomes that with far better music than Chesney has produced in recent months.
Stand Out Tracks:
"I Got A Feelin' " is a song in the traditional 'I'm in love with you' Nashville style, served up well with above average lyrics and a catchy rhythm.
"Walk A Little Straighter" a moving song about growing up with an alcoholic father, "Walk.." truly stands out on this album as not only a great single, but an instant classic sure to be Currington's first signature song.
"Time With You" If I was leading Billy's career, this would be the next single. A slow, beautiful love ballad that gives Currington a unique identity. This could easily become the song the ladies remember him by. A great, great song. Musically impressive as well as vocally, with the use of a grand piano sound to move the song along.
"Ain't What It Used To Be" I admit this song is the best (or is it worst) example of Currington sounding like Kenny Chesney, but it's a fun, loud, song about growing up and moving on. Should make for a great live-show song.
So, what can I say. A great debut album that suggests a long future for Currington, though he will need to choose his songs carefully to be sure to have a unique identity on country radio.
