Carrie's Corner
line

Dateline: April 2, 2001

I have loved the Statler Brothers music since I was A little girl. They have a new album, "Show Time" that will be released on April 10th, so I thought I would make this week's Carrie's Corner about one of my most favorite country music groups.

There are four members of the group.

  • Harold Reid (my favorite), you can always depend on him for a joke and for that low bass sound of his voice.
  • Don Reid (Harold's Brother) who mostly sings lead and tries in vain to keep Harold in line.
  • Phil Balsley (the quiet one) who sings such awesome harmony.
  • Jimmy Fortune (the newest member of the group.)

I also have to mention Lew Dewitt who for years was my favorite member of the group. He had such an awesome voice. He was forced by an illness in the early 1980s to quit the group.

It is interesting that in all the years they have been singing together that the sound and what the Statlers stand for has not changed. They are truly what America is supposed to be all about. I have heard the word nostalgia used to describe the Statlers. I think that is the perfect word to describe them. They sing of families and friends, losing and gaining love. God and heaven. Memories of childhood and school days.

Some of my most cherished childhood memories are of listening to their music. I loved their "Holy Bible" albums. To this day they are bible stories that I can remember by humming the songs from those two albums.
