Ronnie Milsap was born January 16th 1943 in Robbinsville, North Carolina. His early years were tough indeed. His mother was not able to care for him, so at a young age he was sent by his father to live with his grandparents. He was born partially blind, and after an incident with a teacher, Ronnie lost the rest of his vision.
Ronnie studied piano, violin, and guitar at the state school for the blind in Raleigh, and at one time could have become a lawyer.. but decided insted on a career in music.
His first single released in 1963, "Total Disaster" followed by several songs that were released by duo Ashford and Simpson including "Let's Go Get Stoned," which was also released by Ray Charles and became a hit several months later.
In 1969, Ronnie performed at Elvis Presley's New Years Eve party. After the performance, Elvis invited Ronnie to sing backup on "Don't Cry Daddy" and "Kentucky Rain."
In the early to mid 1970s Ronnie recorded for RCA records, and produced what would become known as his greatest hits, such as "Pure Love" and "I'd Be A Legend In My Own Time."
1975 found Ronnie as Glen Campbell's opening act in the UK. It was also the year that his song "It Was Almost Like A Song" hit number 16 on the American music charts.
In 1979, Ronnie went in a little bit different direction with his music and displayed his well known sense of humor by sending out a new single "Hi Heeled Sneakers" to the radio stations without a name on the single. Guess who this is singing the stations were told.
Moving into the 1980s, he had several well known hits such as "Lost In The 50s/In The Still Of The Night, and his duet with Kenny Rogers, "Make No Mistake/Shes Mine." His last number one to date was in 1989 with "A Woman In Love."
Ronnie still performs dates all around the country, and around the world. He even takes time from his busy schedule to join us on his online fan forum chats. We had the chance to chat with him about two weeks ago. He is a great guy with a great sense of humor. This
article is dedicated to Jolene and all Ronnie's online fans.
