Interesting Facts

George Jones recieved his nickname of "The Possum" from a disc jockey who thought that due to his close set eyes and upturned nose that George resembled the pesky critter.

George Jones recorded some rockabillly music during the early years of his recording career under the name "Thumper Jones." If you ever run across any of his Thumper recordings.. DONT ask him to autograph them... he has been known to destroy every copy that he has gotten ahold of.

J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) and George Jones did the background vocals for Johnny Preston's classic country song "Running Bear."

"He Stopped Loving Her Today," one of Georges signature songs features Janie Fricke doing the background vocals.

J.P Richardson wrote one of Georges biggest hits -- "White Lightning."

"I Never Went Into This Business Even Thinking About Money, What I Would Do Or Where I Would Be. I Just Wanted My Guitar In My Hand And To Keep Going. I Just Wanted To Sing." George Jones

George Jones had his first charting song in 1955 with "Why Baby Why," and his first country hit in 1959, with "White Lightning." The flip side of "White Lightning" was "Window Up Above."

In the early 60s he released "She Thinks I Still Care," and "The Race Is On."

Early in the 70s he signed with the Epic Records, and with the famous producer Billy Sherill, at the helm of his career had one heck of a turbulent and successful 20 years. This is what most people refer to as "The George and Tammy Era." And others refer to it as "The No Show Jones Era." As I missed most of the 70s, I just have to say that the music that was made during that time was, and still is "THE BEST"

George continued making music on into the early 80s when one of the biggest hits of his career "He Stopped Loving Her Today" was released. It was nominated for, and won CMA Single of the Year for 1981.

He honky-tonked his way into the 1990s when he and ten of his country music buddys recorded and made a music video of "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair," which won CMA Vocal Event Of The Year in 1991. He also took part in a recording called "The Bradley Barn Sessions," which featured him singing "Good Year For The Roses," which is one of my favorite songs with newcomer Alan Jackson.

I for one am very greatful that George and Tammy Wynette mended their fences and gave us one last great album of duets before her sudden passing. "One" is a must have for any fan.

Among the newer generation of country singers George has many admirers and Alan Jackson is probably the most outspoken of all. During the 1999 CMA Awards show, George wasn't allowed to sing a song in its entirety that had been chosen for him to sing, so he didnt take part in the awards show. Alan came on, sang part of his song, stopped his band and as a show of respect sang part of George's song and walked off... Nashville was buzzing!!!!!
