Carrie's Corner

Dateline: December 11, 2000

As the year 2000 is winding down to a close, I thought this would be a good time to write about my three favorite country music albums of this year.

Let's start with my most favorite. It would have to be Keith Whitley's "Sad Songs And Waltzes." I have been listening to it for almost three months now, and I love it more each time I listen to it. From the old Lefty Frizzell song "I Never Go Around Mirrors," to Merle Haggard's "Somewhere Between," and the oh so CHOICE demo version of "Does Ft Worth Ever Cross Your Mind," (a song that Keith did first, and was given by the record company to then new up and comer, George Strait), this album is a must have for any Keith Whitley fan.

My second favorite country album of the year is a little bit different. It's Tim O'Brien's "The Crossing." It's an album of Irish Bluegrass music. For those of you who dont know who Tim is... He has been on several of Kathy Mattea's albums and is her duet partner in the song "Battle Hymn Of Love." It is a beautiful album. My favorite songs on it are "Ireland's Green Shore," which is about the coming together of the "old and the new countrys." And "The Ribbon In Your Hair," a beautiful love song featuring Kathy Mattea.

For those who know me and my music tastes so well... I love classic country music best of all.. So my third favorite album of this year is "Hank Williams: Alone With His Guitar." Once you hear this album of Hank's demo songs you will never hear him the same again. I have to say my favorite songs from this album are "First Year Blues," a song about newly married man's marital woes. "My Buckets Got A Hole In It," a good old honky tonk song, and "Kaliwga," where you can hear Hank have to start the song over several times due to having problems with the key changes in the song. Listen to this album and close your eyes. It's like Hank is in the room singing to you.

Read my reviews of each of these albums.
