On Saturday, March 2, 2002 Charlie Daniels took the stage on the Twin Oaks Mansion in Silver Springs, FL. It was only his second date since his successful surgery for Prostate Cancer in December.
Charlie was looking fit and ready to be back on the road again. He was dressed in a western shirt, jeans, boots and his trademark hat. His band is terrific. Most have been with Charlie for decades. They have a great stage rapport and a good audience connection. Along with the classic Charlie Daniels songs there were a couple of songs that band members had written. Charlie stepped back and showcased his band members while he did some serious fiddle playing to back up their very capable vocals.
This was my first Charlie Daniels concert and I was impressed. Charlie does not mince words, and I like that in a person. He is 100% American and it is very apparent on where his convictions lie. He received a standing ovation for his extremely patriotic "It Ain't No Rag." This song has been banned from some airwaves because it may not be the most "politically correct" song out there. However, Charlie refuses to change the words to the song because it completely reflects what he believes in. He is also one of the absolute best fiddle players out there. The sound was one of the loudest shows I've been to, but there was some serious "jamming" going on. He went through 5 or 6 bows for his fiddle, when he was done with a song the horsehair strings were nothing but fuzz. He made a couple of happy fans by handing his used bow into outstretched hands.
If you enjoy great music and someone who is not afraid to tell you what he thinks, I completely recommend seeing Charlie Daniels if he is in your area. He doesn't do a lot of talking, but he knows how to entertain.
