line Interview with Charlie Robison
(March 28, 2001)
line

Charlie Robison is releasing Step Right Up on April 10th. He took the time to answer some questions from our Forum host and reviewer, (BMPRSHOST), Jennifer Webb.

BMPRSHOST: Hello Charlie (if I may call you that), I've been a fan of yours for a year now and I wanted to say that I just cannot get enough of your music (you should have seen me "Waiting for the Mail" once I knew your latest was on the way). You put on a great show (saw you with Montgomery Gentry last year here in Waco, Texas) and if you ever come back I'll go see you again.

Looking over your past two albums ("Bandera" and "Life of the Party") as well as the new one, I see that you put in a song or two from a previous album into whatever newest one that is coming out. Why is that?

Charlie Robison:THE BANDERA RECORD IS VERY HARD TO FIND, SO I AM PICKING ONE OR TWO OF MY FAVORITES OFF THAT ONE TO ADD TO EACH NEW ONE SO THEY DON'T GET FORGOTTEN.

BMPRSHOST: Do you think you will do that on all upcoming albums?

Charlie Robison: PROBABLY SO.

BMPRSHOST: You've either written or co-written eight songs on this album, do you think of songs that pertain to your life, make them up, or a mixture of both?

Charlie Robison: I DO BOTH. IT'S FUN TO TALK BOUT MY EXPERIENCES BUT IT'S ALSO FUN JUST TO LET YOUR IMAGINATION RUN.

BMPRSHOST: How many songs would you say you have written in your lifetime?

Charlie Robison: AT LEAST 150.

BMPRSHOST: Is it hard for you and your brother, Bruce, to write songs together, or do ya'll pretty much get along all the time?

Charlie Robison: SONGWRITING IS ABOUT THE ONLY TIME WE ARE SURE TO BE POLITE AND AGREE WITH ONE ANOTHER.

BMPRSHOST: Would you and your brother ever do an album of songs ya'll sing together? I just love "Rayne, Louisiana" from the "Unleashed Live" disc.

Charlie Robison: WE'RE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT THAT RIGHT NOW.

BMPRSHOST: Why did you choose "Step Right Up" as the title of this album?

Charlie Robison: SOMETIMES ON STAGE I FEEL LIKE A CARNIVAL BARKER, AND THE WAY THE BARKERS GET YOUR ATTENTION IS HOLLERING "STEP RIGHT UP."

BMPRSHOST: Was the song "Life of the Party" originally intended for your album of the same name?

Charlie Robison: NO, I JUST FIGURED IN HIND SIGHT I DEFINITELY NEEDED A SONG WITH THAT TITLE.

BMPRSHOST: What goals would you like to accomplish with this album?

Charlie Robison: I'VE ALREADY REACHED ALL OF THEM JUST BY GETTING IT DONE. THE REST IS UP TO THE PEOPLE.

BMPRSHOST: If you had to pick a favorite Classic Country Artist, and a newer country artist, who would you pick?

Charlie Robison: ROGER MILLER AND BRUCE ROBISON.

BMPRSHOST: Of the songs that you have recorded, which is your favorite one to perform live?

Charlie Robison: "MY HOMETOWN."

BMPRSHOST: Of the songs that you have not recorded, which is your favorite one to perform live?

Charlie Robison: "DADDY'S LITTLE PUMPKIN."

BMPRSHOST: Do you ever browse around the Internet when you have the time?

Charlie Robison: I DON'T KNOW HOW TO TURN ON A KUMPEWTUR.

BMPRSHOST: What would you like to say to the fans out there reading this?

Charlie Robison: THANKS FOR MAKING ALL OF THIS POSSIBLE FOR ME BY BUYING MY RECORDS AND SPREADING THE WORD.

BMPRSHOST: Thank you very much, Mr. Robison for doing this interview. It really means a lot to me to be able to do this. You are my absolute favorite artist and I wish you much success in whatever you choose to do.

Charlie Robison: THANKS TO YOU, TOO, JENNIFER. LOVE, CHARLIE
