CD Review: Off The Top Rope - Chuck Wagon & The Wheels

Chuck Wagon and The Wheels have been together for nineteen years and have had huge amounts of success overseas. This is their first U.S. album and it is on Lyric Street Records.

Off the Top Rope is a little bit Country, and a whole lot of Comedy. I am not usually a fan of the mixing of those two factors but Chuck, Sid, and Carl made me laugh as I listened to all of the songs (especially on "Play That Country Music Cowboy" and "Jerry Springer Show").

"Play That Country Music Cowboy" is the first song on the album and is based on "Play That Funky Music White Boy" (Robert W. Parissi). Starting off with a "Aaaiiiieeeeyy!" and between

(intentional) squeaky horns you hear such lyrics as "Boot scoot and boogie and play that country music really loud."

In the next song the guy is getting pumped up for his visit to the "Jerry Springer Show." To build his muscles he runs around the house throwing chairs and occasionally slapping his very own face. He also works on cursing so he will not be upstaged. This is funny and a good jab at the real show, while the squabble at the end is perfect.

Maybe "Country 2010" is trying to convince us to say country all the time, since we hear that word almost forty-five times in this song (yes I did count). It talks about how the country people all like their fiddles, big trucks, and even their biscuits. They are proud of where they come from.

Trucks, girls, beer, Merle, and girls in trucks (with beer) are the definitions of love according to "That's Love." I would say this is a simple song that pokes fun at a typical, sugar coated, supersweet love ballad.

A cover of Johnny Horton's "Honky Tonk Man" is up next and you can hear a crowd screaming wildly in the background. I like it when they sing "I like to live dangerously and most of the time, I don't get no sleep. 'Cause the moon comes up and the sun goes down and I feel like a big ole honky tonk clown."

After Chuck says "I'm Chuck Wagon himself, and these are my Wheels!" he breaks into a remake of George Jones' song, "White Lightnin'." The music is very energetic and would also get a crowd going like the song above.

At the end, instead of saying "Oooh white lightening," they sing "Wipe Out!" and then start playing an original instrumental version of the song mixed in with some country sounding parts to it.

"Beauty's In The Eye Of The Beerholder" is the first single and video from this album. The video features many "characters" running around a wrestling arena and sitting in the audience. "'Cause man she's all tattooed, she's wearing Army boots, a mini skirt and some white tube socks. She's got nose rings and other pierced things. Looks like she fell in a tackle box."
