line Tim McGraw - Set This Circus Down
Cut By Cut
line

Tim McGraw gives his thoughts on each of the songs on Set This Circus Down.

Cowboy In Me (Craig Wisemen, Jeffrey Steele, Al Anderson)

It's a guy song. It's not a song that you want your girlfriend to know that you relate to.

Telluride (Troy Verges, Brett James)

It's a song about being a wandering spirit. The next best thing to being a bartender in Telluride is being a ski instructor in Telluride. I couldn't really sing about being a ski instructor in Telluride so a bartender made for better music.

You Get Used To Somebody (Tom Shapiro, Steve Bogard)

A quintessential modern country song. It's fun to sing and easy to sing. It flows really well. It doesn't ring really nice - kind of a slap

in the face to somebody you love - but the last line turns it around for me. "You get used to being in love."

Unbroken (Holly Lamar, Anne Roboff)

Just a cut loose, have fun song. It'll be a great song to do live. It's a song about being happy in your life and being happy with your relationship and finding somebody who fixes things in your life. It's kind of what happened to me.

Things Change (Aimee Mayo, Bill Luther, Chris Lindsey, Marv Green)

This is a song that I felt said a lot about what is going on in music today. Just a statement saying that people should just let each other make their music, their way and let the fans be the judges.

Angel Boy (Danny Orton)

Angel Boy was one of those songs a little left of center that I really wanted to handle. A songwriter puts a lot oof heart into what they do and the last thing that you want is to take a great song, just because you like it, and take it in there and not do a good job. It's a very meaningful track that is just so different from anything that I've ever done before and I'm just so proud of it.

Forget About Us (Mark Collie)

That was written in a car drivin' down the road in about 10 minutes. It was one of those songs that just happens. It's not studied, manipulated and it's not molded into a song that takes a while. From the first time I heard it I knew that it was what I wanted the record to sound like.

Take Me Away From Here (Steve Bogard, Jeff Stevens)

It's one of my favorite cuts on the album. It's very sensual lyrically, but even more then the lyrics it's the feel of the song.

Smilin' (Bill Luther, Aimee Mayo, Chris Lindsey, Marv Green)

The main reason I cut this song is the one line: "I feel like a bum with a pocketful of diamonds" - that's pretty dead on.

Set This Circus Down (Bill Luther, Josh Kear)

It sounds like my wife and I sat down and wrote this song. It fits so perfectly - 'one of these days we'll find a piece of ground just outside some sleepy little town and set this circus down'.

Angry All The Time (Bruce Robison)

I thought that it would be cool to step out of my skin and sing a song that has a different perspective on a relationship then what I'm used to singing.

Let Me Love You (Aimee Mayo, Bill Luther, Chris Lindsey, Marv Green)

It's a sexy song. The main reason we cut the song was because of the guitar parts. We couldn't take away the opportunity for my guitarist (Darren) to show his chops. It's such a thrill for him to play this song.

Grown Men Don't Cry (Tom Douglas, Steve Seskin)

It's one of those songs that anyone could've recorded and made a hit. There's one line in there when it says 'I love you dad' - I don't know how many times we had to do that one line before we got one that I wasn't chokin' up on when I sang. It's a very emotional song.

Why We Said Goodbye (Tom Douglas, Billy Kirsch)

It reminded me of "She Can't Be Really Gone" - a record that we cut before - vocally. I thought that it was important to have a few songs on the record that are easily identifiable from the vocals and this was one of those.
