line Clay Walker - Say No More
(Cut By Cut)
line

Clay Walker gives us a look at his thoughts on each of the songs off his new CD, Say No More.

"Say No More" (Tom Shapiro, George Teren)

"This is the kind of song that, while it may not shock people, will pleasantly surprise folks. The chord progression is very different, very progressive. You won't hear anything out there like it. At the same time that it's different enough, it has this big production that I think ought to find its place on radio."

"Real" (Ron Harbin, Richie McDonald, Noah Gordon)

"This has one of the best melodies for a ballad I've heard in a long time. In a way, it reminds me of '80s rock ballads. It was fun hitting that falsetto. But it was tough too. There are no pick-up notes to grab onto. I can't remember working that hard on the vocals for a song before. I think I sang it 20 times to get it right."

"If You Ever Feel Like Lovin' Me Again"

"There's a cool little charm about this song. It seems like a real simple, laidback country song but the melody is just so infectious. People who hear it, whether they like traditional country or pop country, can't seem to get it out of their heads. Maybe that's why it's my favorite on the record."

"Could I Ask You Not To Dance" (Aaron Barker, Ron Harbin, Anthony Smith)

"As far as lyrics go, these are my favorite on the album. I mean, they almost make me want to cry and I'm not the kind to tear up very easy. But everyone goes through getting dumped and it sucks."

"La Bamba" (Ritchie Valens)

"It took a lot of guts to try this because I know some people will rip me for it. But being nervous is good for you. I was serious about doing this song. I worked four years learning enough Spanish because I wanted it to be so correct that when a Latino hears it, he doesn't go 'There's a gringo.' When people speak the language, they ought to try to pronounce it right. Beyond that, this is just a great song, so much emotion and excitement. It's a party song."

"You Deliver Me" (Brian Ede Nash, Mike Post, David Pearson)

"Yes, this song could be taken as being just about a relationship but it has a spiritual meaning for me too. There's an essence of forgiveness to it, a tenderness that's humble. I love singing it because it allows you to slip into a higher level of being, but still grounds you on earth. It's between here and heaven."

"I Love It" (Philip Douglas, James Yeary, Ron Harbin)

"This has my favorite single line on the album: 'But if there's one thing that I love the most/It's how she does exactly what I think she won't.' There's another great line too: 'She's got her two tattoos, one on her back/And I ain't saying where the other one's at.' Well, I think I know where the other one's at."

"She's Easy To Hold" (Clay Walker, Kent Blazy, Kim Williams)

"A song about every strong-willed woman--and most of them are."

"Rough Around The Edges" (Lance Miller, Darryl Worley, Kim Williams)

"The way I rank singers, Merle Haggard is #1 to me. Just on his voice, he has everything you'd ever hope for. I love songs like 'I Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink' and this song is on that same beat. Honky tonk dancin' music."

"Texas Swing" (Clay Walker, L. David Lewis, Kim Williams)

"I've always admired swing music, especially being from Texas. But it was scary doing this song because I know I'll be critiqued by the people I care about the most--my buddies and peers and also swing musicians and fans. A lot of swing people didn't even know me before I sang 'Take Me Back To Tulsa' on Asleep At The Wheel's 1999 tribute to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, Ride With Bob (which was nominated for six Grammys). But when they said I nailed it, that was such a great compliment. This song is also the most fun for my band to play, and how a song is received in a live venue influences me a lot. Besides, it adds some class to the album. This isn't hokey swing music, it's jazzy like Bob Wills or Frank Sinatra would do it."

"So Much More" (Clay Walker, M. Jason Greene)

"I started writing this melody and part of the lyrics in junior high school in the choir room. I skipped Trigonometry class and played it on the piano. Jason and I grew up together and have been writing since we were kids. Then recently we were sitting in The Doghouse, what I call the apartment above my barn, at two in the morning, just about to call it a night and this hit us just perfect. It has a ton of emotion. It's so very fragile and so very tender, you can hear my vocal chords rubbing together."
