CD Review: Greatest Hits, Vol. II - Clint Black

As far as greatest hits CDs go, I’m not generally a big fan of them. They tend to have on them the same tired songs that I liked when first released, but couldn’t stand by the millionth listen. At that point I couldn’t care less if I ever heard them again. Having said that, I have to admit I have fully enjoyed Clint Black’s new Greatest Hits Volume 2. This is what a greatest hits album should be. Most of the songs on it are old enough that if country radio did run them into the ground, I don’t remember and therefore I was able to enjoy listening to them again.

Three of the sixteen songs (“Nothing’s News,” “Walkin’ Away,” and “Nobody’s Home”) date back to Black’s very first CD, Killin’ Time, originally released in 1989. The next nine songs are a good mix of hits spanning a decade of great music. From “One More Payment,” off of the 1990 Put Yourself In My Shoes CD, to a couple duets from the 1999 release D’Lectrified; “Been There,” with Steve Wariner and "When I Said I Do," with his wife Lisa Hartman Black. The first twelve songs alone would have made Greatest Hits Volume 2 a CD well worth the money, so the bonus tracks are exactly that: a bonus.

First there is the new duet with his wife, "Easy for Me to Say." Nothing like the other husband/wife duets country radio loves to play, this song is beautiful and a true love song.

Another new song on the CD, titled “Money or Love,” is fast paced all country as only Clint Black can sing it song about how in the end, you better know love is the more important then wealth.

My favorite of the bonus tracks is a tie between these last two. There is a blues version of “Put Yourself in My Shoes.” Same lyrics but much different music, it makes you want to turn it up real loud, close your eyes and just sit back and absorb it. The other of my favorites would be “Little Pearl and Lily’s Lullaby.” An absolutely beautiful song celebrating the arrival of their first child Lily Pearl. The song literally gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes.

If you stick this CD in your CD Rom to listen you can access the enhanced and features exclusive backstage footage from Black’s D’Lectrified tour, desktop wallpaper and a screensaver.
