CD Review: Complete - Lila McCann

line Lila McCann - Complete line
Reviewed by Jennifer Webb

I have always liked Lila McCann's music, and with her album, "Complete," I can hear the gained maturity and experience shining through each song. She can do something that is energetic and fast and then change to belting out a ballad with a snap of the fingers.

Grammy-nominated David Malloy produces the album and you can tell because the whole project is very polished, well sequenced, and smooth.

"Where It Used to Break" is the story of a girl that wakes up one morning and is totally over her ex boyfriend. "Oh yeah, time is what it takes to make a heart stop bending where it used to break" is how part of the chorus goes. It is normal to be emotional after a breakup and we need to know that we can move on with our lives.

The first single and video from this album is "Come A Little Closer." Its energetic, spunky, and fun quotient would appeal to a wide audience of music fans. When a couple is in love they usually want to spend time being close to one another and spending time in each other's arms instead of being apart. Instead of showing this in the video for this song, it features Lila dancing around and singing by herself in various locations (in front of a mirror, on steps, etc).

A very nice ballad, "Complete," is her singing about how she has only half a heart and is half a woman when her man is gone, but once he is back with her she is whole again. With this song, you can tell that Lila has grown up and experienced more things since she recorded her other albums. In my opinion, I think she should release this song as a single in the future.

In "Like a Rocket," her heart catches fire when she and her man kiss; "Even gravity can't hold us down," she sings in this funky tune about how powerful and fast a love can begin. Like "Come A Little Closer," this song is another fun one to sing along to.

The next song, "She Remembers Love," is pretty much the same content as "She Misses Him" by Tim Rushlow, only the Alzheimer patient is female and "she remembers love, the blue in his eyes, hot summer nights, it's like she's memorized his every touch and how he swept her heart away like it was yesterday." Songs like this always touch me and this is one of my favorites from the album. The lady may not remember everything but love conquers all and she thinks about the special moments she and her husband had.

This combination of up tempo songs and ballads is a spectacular balance that blends well with Lila's voice and age. The songs state what kind of place she is in at this point of her life, and it seems to be a lovely one as reflected in the wonderful album, "Complete."
