Craig Morgan Interview (December 22, 2003) | |
|
Craig kindly took the time out of his busy schedule preparing to go overseas to perform for our military service men and women to answer some questions posed by your AboutCountry Staff.
AboutCountry Staff: I know that you are a Military vet, so I was wondering if you are also a reservist?
Craig Morgan: Yes, I'm a Staff Sergeant in the Army Reserves, and have been for six years. I have 17 years total of service, 11 of active duty, plus the six in the reserves.
AboutCountry Staff: "God, Family & Country" is such a great song that everyone can relate to whether they are in the military or not. I was wondering how you came to write the song.
Craig Morgan: It was an idea presented to me by my co-writers Craig Morris and Lance McDaniel. They had the title-once they thought of that title they called me up and asked me to work on the song with them. So we got together to write, and we wrote it based in large part on my own personal experience in the military-even though the song's about a different generation.
AboutCountry Staff: The first song I heard by heard by you was "Something To Write Home About," which I could relate to since I moved away from home, I was wondering if this song was written from the perspective of a Military member?
Craig Morgan: Well, because I have spent so much time in the military, those experiences just about always have influence on my writing.
AboutCountry Staff: What was it like to hear your first single on the radio? Where were you when you heard it?
Craig Morgan: I was in Dickson, TN (where I live), driving in my truck. It was incredible!!!!!!!!!
AboutCountry Staff: I know your fans are important to you and your career. Do you find that being a Military vet leads to your shows having a lot of Military personnel at them?
Craig Morgan: Yes, definitely. Any time I am near any military installation people come out because of that relationship.
AboutCountry Staff: Do you play any instruments other than the guitar?
Craig Morgan: Nope!
AboutCountry Staff: How do you go about picking out the songs you put on an album?
Craig Morgan: I pick songs that I think the majority of people who listen to country radio will be able to relate to. And, whether it's a song I've written or not, almost always there is something in every song that I can relate to as well, based on my own personal experiences.
AboutCountry Staff: What do you do to relax while you're out on the road?
Craig Morgan: Hunt, fish, and play Playstation II with my band!
AboutCountry Staff: When did you decide that you wanted to be a country music artist?
Craig Morgan: When I was in Korea in the military I started entering singing and songwriting contests-and winning! I thought then that I might have a chance at this, but it wasn't until years later that I pursued it.
AboutCountry Staff: What was your inspiration for writing the song "Almost Home"?
Craig Morgan: The hook was something that came to me when I was out on the road, telling my family on the phone that I was "almost home". Then the song really started coming together when I was in Nashville and drove past a homeless guy sleeping downtown and thought "he's almost home". The song just kind of came together after that.
AboutCountry Staff: In the past you have talked about getting involved with celebrity boxing. Have you done anything with that idea?
Craig Morgan: No. That's something I was approached about once, but I haven't done anything about it and I don't plan to.
AboutCountry Staff: If you could sit down and have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would they be?
Craig Morgan: 1) Billy Graham 2) Moses. 3) George Bush Sr.
AboutCountry Staff: How was recording your second album different than recording your debut?
Craig Morgan: I co-produced this one and I had direct input and influence on every aspect of the record, from selecting the musicians all the way to selecting the catering for the recording sessions!
AboutCountry Staff: Some people say USO tours aren't important. You have seen both sides of it - being entertained as a soldier and now doing the entertainment. What does it really mean to the men and women over there to have the tour come through for them?
Craig Morgan: Anybody who says that they are not important has never been there. Me, having been there, I can tell you it is as important to morale as a good hot meal. As a soldier, you hear all of the negatives back home, so it's always uplifting to have someone come over and share the positives.
AboutCountry Staff: What would you like to say to the fans reading this?
Craig Morgan: Thanks for all of your support! I hope to get a chance to meet you all personally when I visit your towns when I'm out on the road.
