Even though Mr. Ball has a distinctive voice, the first time I heard "Riding With Private Malone," (which is his first single from the album) I did not have a clue who was singing. Once the deejay said who it was, I was ecstatic to realize he was back in business and on the radio again.

This being David Ball's fifth album (not counting his "Super Hits" disc), he still holds true to his roots and will not let anyone tell him what kind of music to make. He makes what he wants and that is the way it is going to be whether anyone likes it or not.

"Amigo" is a good "grab your partner and have some fun on the dance floor" type of tune while you listen along to the man singing about his friend (the guitar he plays all the time). "Wherever you go, we go, Amigo. On the road that leads us to the setting sun" is what the chorus starts off with; which means that "Amigo" helps him get through the rough times when there is not necessarily a human comrade to talk to.

The story in "Riding with Private Malone" tells of a young man that just got out of the military and how he saw a classified ad for a Chevrolet. When he saw the car, he realized it was a 1966 Corvette and before he drove away he found a note in the glove box that was from another young man. It said "If you are reading this I didn't make it out of the war and I hope you take care of my car." A while after the purchase the young man got into a horrible crash, a witness said they thought they saw a soldier pull him out of the car and he knew who it was - his hero was Private Andrew Malone. They were riding together that night.

A good bar sing-along song is found in "Loser Friendly." In it, the man is talking about how everyone has their ups and downs, and the girl that paid him some attention while he was wallowing in self-pity and playing solitaire is just being nice to him because he is down in the dumps. If he was happy she probably would not have given him the time of day.

He wants his honey to "Linger Awhile" instead of leaving him all alone in this next song. In the beginning the beat is slow to reflect his sad mood, but then it revs up to yet another honky tonk song that I can imagine people having a blast dancing to.

It feels like I am truly experiencing Oktoberfest (or Wurstfest in my old city of New Braunfels) right here in the comfort of my very own home whenever I listen to the "squeezeboxes" in "New Shiner Polka." There is no singing involved but it is a very fun song to listen to and enjoy old memories of hearing similar music.

Just as the title suggests, "Swing Baby," is about "swingin' all your troubles away." Everybody needs a way to get their feelings off of what is bothering them, so why not have some fun and swing dance? Music is a good healer and once the music starts, the singer says that you will not worry about a thing.

I have loved David Ball's music since way back in 1994 when I was in the beginning stages of becoming a Country Music lover and I cannot help but think he was one of the primary people that got me into this type of music. His song "Thinkin' Problem" made me go out and buy his album of the same name almost in an instant after hearing the song for the first time. Since that day, all of his songs have been rather special to me and this album is no different. Out of thirteen songs there is no way I can pick out a favorite. All of them are high quality, well written, and highly enjoyable. And I recommend that everybody go out and buy this album, you will be glad you did.
