Deana Carter Collection - Deana Carter | |

In 1996 there was a song that came on the radio and captured the hearts of millions of country music fans. "Strawberry Wine" defied all odds to become a multi-week number one hit for newcomer Deana Carter. Deana's soft yet firm voice simply was the antithesis of what we usually see in music; big-voiced stars.
From there, Deana achieved more than she could've ever dreamed of in just a short time. What seemed to take forever to achieve, literally happened overnight. Deana went on to have five hit singles from her Multi-platinum debut "Did I Shave My Legs For This" while her second release, certified Gold by the RIAA, "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" had a couple other hits from it.
Well, everything wasn't alright at Capitol for Deana. Amidst a slew of personnel changes, Deana, along with a few other artists were left standing by the new label management. Since their split in 2000, Deana has released a Christmas collection, and is now signed to Arista Nashville and will release her third full length record in 2003.
Until then, we have Capitol's new "Deana Carter Collection." Containing all of the hits that made Deana a household name, this album contains three songs that were in Capital's vaults and were added to make this a complete "hits" package.
"Strawberry Wine" became a mega hit that won the coveted CMA "Single of the Year" in 1997. With it's tale of teenage love, the song will eternally be one of the best to have come out of the 90's decade.
"We Danced Anyway" became another Billboard No. 1 hit for Deana in 1997. Much like "Strawberry Wine," this track talked about a newfound love. Here the lyrics talk about trying to get back to that magic first trip they took after their marriage.
"Count Me In" is a soft and tender ballad that was another smash hit off of the "Did I Shave My Legs For This" album. With lyrics like "If heartache and tears and shadows of doubt are part of the deal, you can count me out/if you're talking about a game I can't win/you can count me in," I'm not surprised the song became the hit that it did.
"Absence Of The Heart" was one of the bigger hits off of Deana's second album "Everything's Gonna Be Alright." A somber tale of a relationship gone bad, this track became a Top 20 hit for Deana in 1998.
"Rita Valentine" is a song about a woman who defied all odds and went against the grain to get what she wanted. One of three tracks not previously released by Deana, it's too bad that Deana isn't with Capitol Records any longer as this song could be a radio hit. Perhaps it will for some other artist.
"Angel Without A Prayer" is a sad song about a little girl who is abused/neglected by her parents. Originally recorded for an album on the same topic, this track is another good example of the songwriting talent that Deana possesses.
With it's inclusion of every hit single recorded by Deana, "The Deana Carter Collection" is a wonderful capper for her all-too-short stint with Capitol Nashville Records. Those who loved her first album but decided not to get her second one will enjoy this as will those who don't have a Deana record yet.
