For me, the best thing I could ever say about any artist is that their music made me feel something. If a song brought on a smile, or a tear, or made me laugh out loud, then I knew it was good. All my life, that is what has made country music so different from other genres. Unfortunately, a lot of what is coming out of Nashville these days fails to live up to my standards. Having said that, I can tell you I was so excited to hear something new and fresh when I put in this newest CD to review.

Let me tell you about Debrae. She's a model, an actress, owner of her own independent record label (Crusader Records, LLC)..... but I had to wonder "Can she sing? Can she write?" After just one listen to her new CD Desperate Heart I realized this is one very talented lady.

Debrae co-wrote four of the eleven tracks on the CD: "Let's Pretend We Never Met," "You're No Good For Me," "Take Me Now," and "I Like Him The Best." They are all very good tunes, and completely different in style and tempo.

The CD starts out with a catchy tune called "Don't Walk In Here Like You Never Walked Out." The title tells you exactly what this song is about. The beat will have you tapping your feet and bouncing in your seat before it gets to the first chorus.

The attitude of such songs like "Making The Most Of Goodbye," and "You're No Good For Me" can only be described as fun. They are the kind of songs you would dedicate to an ex-boyfriend right after he dumps you, to let him know you aren't going to curl up and die just because he's gone. They are also two of my favorites on the CD.

I love a good slow song. "Is There No Justice In Love" and "Take Me Now" are perfect examples. The first is a sad song about a relationship ending, the latter about one just beginning. The title track is also a wonderful ballad about giving someone the hope that life will get better.

Somehow, she even managed to turn Cyndi Lauper's hit "Time After Time" into a country song. Though I was never a big fan of the original version, I really like the way Debrae did this one. The softer vocals are much more appealing

Another of my favorites is "If He's The Man Of Your Dreams." I can identify with this song completely as I've had this conversation with my best friend. When I listen to it, I can hear me telling her, "I wasn't gonna say a word 'til you brought the word love up, but we've been friends too long to keep my big mouth shut."

By the end of the CD, I'm convinced. Debrae has the heart and soul of a country artist, and she poured it into each of these eleven songs. I sincerely hope all of country music sits up and takes notice. Song List:
