CD Review: Down From The Mountain - Various Artists

"Down From The Mountain" was recorded live May 24, 2000 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee as a benefit concert for the Country Music Hall Of Fame. It's an absolutely fabulous album of bluegrass music. This concert came to be because of the immense popularity of the "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" movie and soundtrack. There is only one thing I found disappointing about this album; and that is that selections by the very talented Peasall sisters were not included. They were a family group of little girls who made an appearance in the movie singing the Original Carter Family's "In The Highways."

The first selection on the album is an awesome acoustic version of "Po Lazarus," which is done so expertly by the legendary music group The Fairfield Four. The rhythmic foot stomping and deepness of the vocal harmonies bring to my mind the old days of prisoners working on chain gangs. Spending the blistering hot days sweating as they pay their debt to society for the crimes they have committed.

"Wild Bill Jones" is an upbeat bluegrass tune sang and played by Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski. Dan is the leader of the band Union Station. They work frequently with Alison Krauss. He is making quite a name for himself independently with his work on the "Oh Brother Soundtrack" and other bluegrass projects.

"Blue And Lonesome" is the second selection on the album that features Dan Tyminski and Alison Krauss. I just can't say enough about how great these two sound together. The rhythmic softness and the awesome harmonies make this my favorite song on the album.

"I Am Weary" is a beautiful bluegrass lullaby, sang by the popular bluegrass group The Cox Family. "Kiss me mother, kiss your darlin'. Lay my head upon your breast. Throw your loving arms around me. I am weary. Let me rest."

"Will There Be Any Stars" is another selection by the Cox Family. It's an upbeat tune that talks about what will your reward be when you get to the kingdom of heaven.

"My Dear Someone" is a slowed down bluegrass love song by bluegrass newcomer Gillian Welch. She has a very beautiful voice that I am looking forward to hearing more of. Gillian sounds a lot like one of country music's greatest female singers - Patsy Cline.

"Sandy Land" is an upbeat tune by one of country music's most talented bluegrass family groups, The Whites.

"I'll Fly Away," the last song on the album, features Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch. I have heard many versions of this song done through the years and I have to say that this is my favorite. Alison and Gillian sound so great together!!!!!!
