Diamond Rio played two shows at the Alameda County Fair on July 3rd. Unfortunately, I didn't remember my camera, so I don't have any photos from the concert. As with the Billy Ray Cyrus concert I saw at the same fairgrounds a week before, this took place in an outdoor amphitheater. I remembered my San Francisco Giants seat cushion for this show, so it was more comfortable sitting through this show on the aluminum bench seats. The weather was also much more mild than it had been the previous week. This was something that Dana didn't let go by during the show, which I will comment on later.
This was my second time seeing Diamond Rio, and they were just as great as I had remembered. The last time I had seen them at the fair in my hometown in 1997, so it had been a while.
Here are the songs that the guys performed:
Ok, some comments... During his introduction of the Bluegrass melody, Dana made reference to the "Summer" weather (it was quite mild for July.. in the low 70's, as compared to the high 80's when I saw Billy Ray the week before) we were having. He had a jacket on, and said he had just gone and bought it, but he didn't think he'd be able to wear it in this wonderful California "Summer", but he was glad he did. He then said if any of us were coming to the second show, we better "go get us a coat too." :D Dana also talked later in the show, about how the guys wrote the song, "Pat O'Flynn" which is a very celtic sounding song. He said the inspiration was when they were watching the movie "Titanic" on the bus one day. He then went into this really funny description of the movie with the pretty "red-haired girl" that kept falling over the side of this boat, and this "funny little blond kid" that helped her stop falling off. The show lasted a bit more than an hour, and I noticed that they didn't do what they had done when I saw them in 1997, which was sing a medley of songs from artists that inspired them. That's cool though. I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and the only thing that could have made it better was if I would have remembered my darn camera. After the show was over, I bought some dinner and listened to some local groups sing, then bought some cotton candy and walked out to my car for the hour drive home. Have you seen Diamond Rio?
