CD Review: Driven Soundtrack - Various Artists

line Driven Soundtrack line

"Driven is not just about guys driving fast. For Stallone, the film is also a highly personal exploration of regret, success, fame and redemptive power of love." - Director/Producer Renny Harlin.

The music that was chosen for the motion picture, Driven encompasses a wide selection of music genres, from pop to country to rap to rhythm and blues. Since I cover country music, I will comment on the songs from country artists, although don't expect traditional sounding country music. Even from Hank Williams grandson.

The country artists represented on this soundtrack include:

  • Jo Dee Messina
  • LeAnn Rimes
  • Hank III
  • Tim McGraw
  • Steve Holy

Jo Dee's contribution to the soundtrack is the title cut from her latest release, "Burn." The song fits in well with the love theme in the movie.

LeAnn Rimes song, "Soon" is from her latest release, "I Need You." It's a beautiful ballad penned by Diane Warren. The theme of this song is about getting over an old love. In the film, there are several characters that are involved. One of them is the former girlfriend of the lead driver. He dumped her, but she still loves him. In the meantime, she hooks up with the guy that is trying to take the lead driver's place as #1.

I'm not really familiar with Hank Williams IIIrd's music, but you'd never consider his song, "Hang On" country in any shape or form. It's very heavy metal-sounding to me. It fits the soundtrack well, though.

Tim McGraw's "Take Me Away From Here" is played when we are first introduced to Sylvester Stallone's character. The song is a great ballad, and is from his latest release, "Set This Circus Down."

The last country song... well, it's NOT a country song, but it's by a country artist, is "Break On Through," the classic Doors song, recorded here by Steve Holy. From the songs I've heard Steve do, I never would have guessed this was him. He covers the song really well.

I loved the movie, and the music is great as well. It makes a great selection of tunes for that roadtrip you've been dying to take.
