Jack Ingram has not released a full album since 1999, not counting Unleashed Live, and his new one, Electric, is one of his best albums yet. You have party-crowd songs and ones that are also haunting which makes for an interesting collection of songs. Jack wrote or co-wrote all but two of the songs and had some help from the likes of Bruce Robison, Jim Lauderdale, and Tom Littlefield, among a few others.
"Keep On Keepin' On" is the perfect kind of song to start off an album with its move-along beat beginning with a lone guitar and addicting chorus, which happen to be tune's title. They are easy enough to remember that you can immediately join in and feel like you are a part of the collection. Throughout the song we hear other popular phrases as "The best things in life are free," and how they are so "cliché" when compared to real life. The message is that the best thing a person can do after any tough situation is keep going and move on with their life.
A confused man wants to know what he did that was so bad in "What Makes You Say," a song co-written with Bruce Robison (and with the same situation as his song "Angry All The Time"). His girl keeps making him feel like dirt and cutting him down and he wants to know if there is anything he can do to make the situation better before he finally realizes that even though she is the only thing he has known, they need to separate because things will never work out: "Loving you is all that I have ever known. But the truth hits and I know we'd be better off alone."
"One Thing," the first single release from Electric that is getting major airplay on various Texas radio stations, really rocks the house and gets the listener energized as Jack sings about how he only knows one thing that is for sure, and that is how he really wants a certain girl to embrace and be his forever because without that he would feel like he is nothing. This is the type of song that would probably sound even better live than it does on this album.
With its horse-trot pace and honky-tonk sound, "Everybody" talks about how all people go through the same emotions like crying, feeling free, etc. People should not be so scared to try different and new things, especially when it comes to relationships because "We all find our own way home," though different paths are taken. Some people might love you and some might hate you, but "nobody cares" because that is how it is with everybody.
Keeping with the "nobody cares" philosophy, only this time on the opposite side of the fence is the sure to be party crowd favorite, "We're All In This Together," a song about how whenever someone feels angry or scared, they do not have to feel alone. At one point in time there will be someone else feeling the same exact way, so instead of feeling bad you should "live it up" and have a good time as suggested in the lyrics: "Life is too short to fuss and fight, so we might as well be friends. Have a good time with the little bit of time we got."
The closing song is entitled, "Goodnight Moon," and it has hauntingly dark music and vocals, which happen to be accentuated with echo effects. The theme is about missing a loved one and longing to kiss them, when the person knows it will be impossible to do, so he just says goodnight to the moon, stars, and even the broke down car before he drifts off for the last time ever.
When I listen to an album, I like diversity and this album definitely has it. You can hear the many facets of Jack Ingram throughout, and that is what I enjoy most from him. His ability to write and sing some of the greatest songs is absolutely unbelievable and he always has fresh material that the listeners will, no doubt, love.
