My night with "Yukon Jack" It was Wednesday, January 27, 1993 and City Limits in Clovis, New Mexico was going to have a band, so they were charging a cover charge. They usually had a $500.00 cash give-away on Wednesday, but some law prohibits them from giving the money away if they charge a cover so they were telling everybody that came in the door that they were not giving the money away that night. Another nightclub down the street also gave money away, so a lot of people were leaving and going there. My friend, Terri, and I opted to stay because we knew a lot of the people who worked there and we just wanted to hang out. After about an hour, there werent very many people there and the band was late, so we were thinking about leaving when one of the bouncers came up and told us to stay and we wouldnt be sorry. He wouldnt tell us why, he just told us not to leave. They had apparently finally been told that someone famous was coming to play, but they still didnt know who. We were sitting in the back of the bar when it looked like they were fixing to start, so I told her that I thought we should move up front to see who this person was. We moved to a closer table, and all of the sudden GARTH BROOKS steps up on stage! I absolutely could not believe it! Terri wasnt even looking at the stage, so I reached over and hit her and said "Oh my God-thats Garth!" It still took her a minute to understand what I was saying. When Garth started to play, there werent even 50 people in the bar! We moved up to an even closer table, and I ran to the phone to call my mom to bring me a camera. There was a line at the phone because people were calling everyone that they knew to tell them to get to City Limits as soon as possible because Garth Brooks was there! A lot of people still didnt believe it and never came they were sure sorry the next day when the story hit the newspapers. Garth played for over 2 hours and then started signing autographs. I remember hearing someone telling him that they needed to hit the road, but he would not leave until everyone who wanted an autograph and/or picture had one. We were among the first in line, so after we got our autographs and pictures we just stood off to the side and watched him visit with everyone. It was definitely a night that I will never forget. |
