Ask any Country Music artist who Gene Watson is and they will say he's a "singer's singer." That means that people who listen to him know how beautifully he sings his songs and try to emulate it. Much like Joe Diffie can today, if you hand Gene Watson a phone book, he'll make the names from it sound good when he sings them.

Gene's RMG Records debut, From The Heart, is his first CD of new material since 1997. On this CD, Gene is singing songs that showcase, that like Kenny

Rogers, his voice is as fine as ever. He has picked some great songs on the CD. There is a fine mix of Ballads and up-tempo songs that give From The Heart great balance. What you won't find on this CD are predictable, Shania Twain styled country/pop songs. Everything here has plenty of twangy guitars accompanied by fiddle and steel guitar.

Featuring a great mandolin solo, "Next To Nothin'" is Gene's debut single from the CD. About a guy who feels like he's isn't anything without his girlfriend by his side. I wish that songs like this one would be played on radio.

On "She Had Me," a smooth blues styled ballad, Gene is singing about falling in love with his girlfriend as soon as he saw her smile.

With the nice fiddle and steel guitar intro, "When You're Not Looking Back" is a beautiful ballad that correlates how people feel about their heroes to the way he feels about a girl he admires.

Written by Whisperin' Bill Anderson and Skip Ewing, "The Truth Is I Lied" first appeared on Ricochet's self-titled 1995 release. As Traditional sounding that a Country song can sound, Gene Watson does an awesome job making it fit his distinct style.

"Would It Be Cheatin'" is a nice song about a guy who ponders how he misses the girl he fell in love, while his wife says the same thing about him. Not really a cheating song, "Would It Be Cheatin'" says many things that sometimes cause friction in a relationship.

"I Never Go Around Mirrors" is the classic Lefty Frizzell song. I have heard two other faithful covers of this song in the past three years. The other versions of this song were by Keith Harling and Trace Adkins. This song, which Gene sings very well, is another great ballad about a guy who cannot even stand to see himself without his departed girlfriend.

If you are looking for a great CD to add to your collection or you are simply interested in Gene Watson, pick up this remarkable CD.
