George Jones has released a collection of Gospel songs called George Jones Sings The Greatest Stories Ever Told. BNA records partnered with independent label Bandit Records in order to distribute this album and it is produced by Billy Sherrill. The title of the album pretty much says it all. George has taken 24 of his favorite Gospel songs and stamped them with his unique voice. Many of the songs are long-time gospel favorites and others are sure to become new favorites. Some of the long-time favorites he has interpreted with his own musical arrangements and others he has sung in the age-old arrangements.
The 24 songs are split up into two CD's with 12 songs on each. Some of his friends stopped in to lend George a hand on this project. Gospel greats Patti Page and Vestal Goodman can both be heard singing with George on some songs. Sheri Copeland also sang with George on "I Know A Man Who Can."
"Amazing Grace" is the song George chose to begin this great project. He has his own interpretation of the song that took a little getting used to. I just couldn't sing along with it, which was fine since that way I just listened. He put a lot of soul into it, singing the first verse a Capella, and then bringing in a muted musical accompaniment for a while, building it up as the song progressed. Very well done.
He continued through the first disc with such songs as "It Is No Secret," "Just A Little Talk With Jesus" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." These are just a few of the gospel standards that he chose. He gave "Just A Little Talk With Jesus" a country and western flavor with some steel and percussion. That combined with the background harmonies of The Smith Family made it very enjoyable to listen to.
The Smith Family was back with George for "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." This is a song I really like, but rarely get to hear. George sounds really good on it. "I'll Fly Away" is another great song that you can't help but tap your toes along with. The harmonies are always fun to listen to and it sounds like everyone is having a wonderful time singing the song.
Patti Page joins George for the classic song, "Precious Memories." They sound really good together and put their heart and soul into the song.
The second CD is a continuation of the great music. George sounds great on "Peace In The Valley," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" along with many more favorites.
Gospel Giant Vestal Goodman joins George on "Mansion Over The Hilltop." She sings with incredible conviction. It is a great song.
I really enjoyed "Family Bible." It was a moving song about the different things your family Bible may witness through the years.
Sheri Copeland and Barry Smith join George for the song "I Know A Man Who Can." They tell of many tasks that you alone can't do, but there is always a man who can if you but ask.
This is a great addition to your gospel collection. Even if you don't normally listen to gospel music, the silver voice of George Jones may draw you in. It is a good album to pop in the stereo to relax with.
