CD Review: If I Could Only Fly - Merle Haggard

An album of all new Merle Haggard songs is a rare treat and I love "If I Could Only Fly."

"Wishin' All The Old Things Were New" is the song of a man who has been there, done that, and knows better now. But he is still tempted by his old habits.

"Turn To Me" is one of my favorite songs on the album. It's one person saying to another, "Hey I'm here if you need me."

"If I Could Only Fly," the title cut of the album is the best song that I have heard Merle do in years.

"(Think About) A Lullabye" is the first single and video release from the album. It is my favorite song from the album. Written at the request of Teresa Haggard for a child of theirs that passed on. It's Merle at his tender best.

"I'm Still Your Daddy" features Mrs. Haggard and two of Merle's children, Ben and Jenessa.

"Proud To Be Your Old Man" is a bubbly upbeat song that I will count as one of Merle's classics in the years to come. "I Might Be Over The Hill.. But You Make Growing Old Quite A Thrill, So Promenade And Take Me By The Hand.. You Make Me Proud To Be Your Old Man."

"Bareback" is an upbeat Texas swing song, very much in the style of Bob Wills, who Merle has always idolized.

"Crazy Moon" is what we who used to be so into the country line dancing craze... a cha cha song. It's soft and has an awesome Tex-Mex soft instrumental backing.
