Brian Burns is an artist largely known in the state of Texas. He records on Bandera Records, and tours all over the state. Unless you're from the area, or like me, happen on his website, you may have never heard of him, but believe me, he's well worth a listen.
One evening in December, I happened upon Brian's website, and I read his bio, and enjoyed the bits of lyrics he had spread throughout his site. I then visited the music page to see if I could listen to some sound clips.
Clicking on the "Listen" button took me to Brian's page on broadcast.com, where I quickly loaded up the RealAudio sample and was totally impressed by what I heard.

Here are the songs on the album, and my impressions:
I've included a short lyric clip from each song in italics.
- Highways, Heartaches, & Honky-Tonks - Very upbeat, and reminiscent of the classic country songs of the 70's and 80's. I'm too old to turn back now, and too young to die...
- Lucy & Desi - If you remember the show I Love Lucy you'll recognize the first few notes. This is a cute and catchy song. I love Lucy and she loves Desi...
- Montgomery Street (Where Did The Good Ones Go?) - A ballad that reminds me of something Alan Jackson would sing. These days people only want your money and your time...
- Whiskey-O - This song cracks me up. It's definitely a two-steppin' kind of song. I'm not a wine-o, I'm a whiskey-o...
- If You Don't Believe I Love You (Ask My Wife) - Another great song. This one sounds like something Willie Nelson would sing. But the lady that I married needs me too, even when Im out here lovin you...
- I Don't Live Here Anymore - This is my absoute favorite. Total heartbreaker. I'm sorry if I woke you, I forgot that I dont live here anymore.
- Mexico In Mind - This one is upbeat. Love it! In all this time all Ive discovered is if its not one damn thing, its another...
- Little Angel, Comes A-Walkin' - This song has a bluesy feel to it. Theres a howling after midnight and a bottle on some strings...
- Commerce & Pearl - When I first heard Brian sing, I thought.. his voice sure sounds familiar. I played a song for my husband and he instantly said Gordon Lightfoot! Listening again, I thought.. my God, he's right. This song is the song I think he sounds most like Gordon Lightfoot. This is another of my favorites, though it's a bit hard to explain the sound. Everybody finds their own kind of truth as the room and the music whirl...
- Dallas After Midnight - Another slow song, part singing and part recitation. This song title is mentioned in Commerce & Pearl. I kept askin myself, howd I ever get so mean I couldnt pray...
- Fire Ants - This song is so funny!! It's got a zydeco sound to it. I said, "good God, Ned, whats all the fuss," but all he could do was yell and cuss, and all I understood was, "fire ants!"
- The Haunted Jukebox - Great tribute song to many of the legends of country music. I could smell the whiskey on Hanks breath, and Patsy Clines perfume all around the haunted jukebox at the Lost Highway Saloon.
