Who I Am - Jessica Andrews
(Cut By Cut)

Jessica Andrews recently discussed the songs on her new album, Who I Am (DreamWorks Records). Released February 27, 2001, it was produced by Byron Gallimore.

"Now I Know": The first time I heard this song, I thought it was incredibly cool -- it's bursting with energy. I know it will be a blast to perform live. The lyrics are about this girl who regrets that she didn't see the warning signs, and now her man has left her. She's wishing she didn't mess up what could have been a great thing.

"Every Time": This is my favorite song on the record. It's about someone who's experiencing love for the first time. She wants to remember the moment forever. She knows that in the future, when she things about this moment, it will "get her every time." When I hear it, it just gets me, too. It's so intimate and beautiful. It's exactly how I fantasize first love to be.

"I Don't Like Anyone": I love this track because it has so much attitude. It's about a girl who doesn't want to do anything but be with the one she loves. It's so clever and catchy. Those little ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah's remind me of something from a '60s girl-group song. That's one of my favorites.

"Karma": This song is so cool and so different from anything out there, pop or country. It just makes me laugh when I hear it. It's about a girl telling a guy the golden rule -- and that he's better watch out or all the things he does to others will come back and smack him in the face. It's got a funky beat and lots of quirkiness. When I first heard it, I wasn't sure it would go over as well as it has. As it turns out, a lot of people tell me it's their favorite song on the album.

"Helplessly, Hopelessly, Recklessly": This song struck me right off the bat. It's so lush and gorgeous. The character is tough and strong, but when it comes to love, she's weak. There's nothing she can do about it. It's a classic ballad.

"Who I Am": The first time I heart "Who I Am," I immediately felt it was written for me. This just had to be the name of the album. It's so close to my life and so positive. I like what the song has to say: It's an anthem declaring that if you know who you are and where you come from, you can do anything. It's about believing in yourself and being supported by those around you who really love you for who you are. No matter what you do, no matter how many mistakes you make, your friends and family will be there for you. It's also got the kind of melody that just sticks in your head.

"These Wings": We were thinking about calling the album These Wings because this song so perfectly captures what it feels like to come of age, to finally have those youthful binds untied and to just soar. It makes me feel high just to sing it. Where I'm at in my life, in my career -- it fits me perfectly.

"Never Had It So Good": Bliss -- That's the word that best describes this song. This woman's in love and life has never been so perfect. Kisses, touches, being together -- it's about the gooey deliciousness of being in love. Mmmmmmm.

"Make Me Love You": In this story, the character is not ready to fall in love and make a commitment, but it happens anyway. You just can't stop love. She was comfortable with her little life, and now everything she knows is being turned upside down. Now she's on the wonderful emotional roller coaster known as love, and she's a little confused, a little lost. But she's also loving it.

"Good Friend To Me": I wrote this song with two amazing writers: Annie Roboff and Bekka Bramlett. We got to talking about how we thought guys should treat girls. Me being so young, they were really into what I had to say. But we were also trying to find some common ground, some universality in our views about men. We decided that, in order to give yourself to someone, you have to first be friends. I think that's something everyone wishes for. This is a gutsy, energetic song, with a lot of attitude. I love a song with attitude! When we were writing, Annie would play a couple of chords on the piano, and then we'd just free-form the lyrics and melody. It worked like magic. One idea sparked another, and all of a sudden, we had this song. Writing "Good Friend" was definitely one of the highlights of making this album. This was the ideal setting to write. I want to keep writing.

"Show Me Heaven": What a beautiful song this is. It reminds me of "Every Time" because it's about someone who's in the first phase of love and thinks being with her lover is her version of heaven. It's starry-eyed and romantic and innocent. It shows all the perfection of love and none of the craziness. And the melody is so striking, you can't help but get swept up in it.
