Jennifer's Texas Country

Dateline: January 7, 2002

Last month I spotlighted Charlie Robison (Calling himself the "Right Man For The Job" of bringing back the good ole kind of Country); this month I will feature the third Artist I discovered when I was just getting into the whole "scene" - Chris Knight - a man that should be in the spotlight but is not "national" yet.

Chris was born in a town that was full of coal miners and had a population of no more than 200 - Slaughters, Kentucky. That fact alone proves that you can be "Texas Country" without actually being born and raised in the state. Knight first went to Nashville in 1991, but it was seven years later that he released his first album, "Chris Knight."

The self-titled album contained a collection of twelve songs, with five solely written by him, and the other six were co-writes. His songs, "It Ain't Easy Being Me" and "Framed," were played and are still played on Texas radio stations for what seems like a fifty times a day because of the popularity of them and all of the listener requests.

If you are wondering why "It Ain't Easy Being Me" sounds a little bit familiar to you, maybe it is because John Anderson and Randy Dukes have covered the tune.

His latest effort, "A Pretty Good Guy," continues the tradition of being unafraid of being straight-laced and politically correct. The twelve songs on here range anywhere from shooting a man to how believing in the Lord is the best way to go through life.

Like with the first release, Texas radio has responded well to the new material, so much so that Randy Travis recorded "Highway Junkie" for the "Full Circle" album, and Gary Allan gave it a whirl for the "Black Dog" Soundtrack.

So far I have not seen any videos from Chris on CMT, but maybe with Pat Green and Charlie Robison getting exposure, people will keep wanting more until he becomes the next "It" guy. I know he has the talent to make it, but right now it is only a matter of being in the right place at the right time, with so many new Artists out there right now.
