Jennifer's Texas Country

Dateline: February 10, 2003

Last month I spotlighted Owen Temple (who is not just "Passing Through" the music scene); this month I will feature Doug Moreland, a multi talented singer/songwriter who was born in Fort Davis, Texas. From an early age he learned to fiddle and since he lived in a small town that was all he ever did.

With four albums under his belt, one might think that Doug has one profession that is "enough" - well that way of thinking would be wrong. Not only does Doug write and sing his songs,

but he also has a little side hobby of sorts - chainsaw carving.

Originally wanting to carve only long enough to make money to record his first two albums, he has become one of the best at his craft and is currently building his store (Texas Chainsaw Masters) in "downtown" Manchaca, Texas. According to his Website, one of the neatest pieces (a cowboy) was stolen by a high school kid and was left out in the woods. Once he brought it out for a party Doug found out and there was a raid. Needless to say he has the cowboy back.

Not only does he do hand carvings, but he is also pretty handy at making western furniture chairs and tables. He can weld and he can turn a raggedy old car into his own red, white, and blue Texas "Cattleac," which he calls either the "Official Car of Texas Music" or just "The Big Car."

Doug's smart dog, Jalapeno, is sometimes a partner up on stage whether that means fiddlin' or just singing along. Just recently Jalapeno has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and has taped an episode of Animal Planet's "Pet Star" show because of his fiddlin' abilities.

The songs Doug sings are often funny and witty and there is always a song or two having to do with Texas ("Heaven or Austin" or "Texas Thing") in his set list or on his albums. He sense of humor is apparent in everything he does which makes his music all the more fun to listen to.

Full Albums Owen Temple Has Released:

  • "Toast To Life"
  • "Number Tres Live"
  • "Ten Beers From Now"
  • "Fore"

Thank you for reading and come back next month for a new article.
