Jennifer's Texas Country

Dateline: March 4, 2002

Last month I spotlighted Cory Morrow (the man that sometimes veers Outside the Lines); this month I will feature Pete Benz, a man that started his musical career six years ago after letting playing football take precedence over writing songs and poetry.

One day, while he was going to College in San Marcos, Texas, he and his friends decided to buy a guitar and from then on Pete became hooked on playing music and singing the songs he had written previously. He did not become a performer right then, but one night while working as a bouncer, his boss called him up to the stage to sing "Friends In Low Places" (made famous by Garth Brooks).

Pete knew that eventually if he was ever going to get his songs out there, he would have to sing, so he bravely took the stage and ended up performing anywhere from eight to nine of his very own songs nightly as he created and shaped some of his natural connections with the audience.

Just as soon as he entered college, he left, deciding that if he was going to do anything in music he would have to quit and get into the business right away. He took a chance and in 1995 released Texas Time Travelin'," which is now very hard to find because it was so popular back then.

His 1998 release, Man I've Been, contains some of Cory's most popular songs: "Nashville Blues," "Big City Stripper," and "Songwriter's Lament," - all solely written by Mr. Morrow. Three years later, in 2001, Cory Morrow Band was released and contained even more masterpieces that were heavily played on Texas Radio: "Texas Bound Train," and "Preacher" are some of my favorites.

Also in 2001, Cory recorded his very own live album with a grand total of twenty-two songs spread along two discs. Songs We Wish We'd Written, with Pat Green, was also released and quickly flew up the Texas Music and Americana Charts.

With Cory being somewhat of a Texas legend himself, everyone is waiting until that fateful day (March 19th) when he releases Outside the Lines, produced by yet another legend, Lloyd Maines. Cory says that with the fan base and support he already has, why try to change your style just to try to get more exposure? He understands the loyalty of the fans and that is what makes him such an all-around nice guy.
