Jennifer's Texas Country

Dateline: May 5, 2003

Last month I spotlighted Jack Ingram (who is more than a "Little Bit" talented); this month I will feature Kevin Fowler, a true redneck who writes some of the best songs in Texas Country, and plain ole' country music in general.

Raised in Amarillo, Texas, Fowler spent most of his days listening to country music anywhere he went. There is no doubt that the music he listened to for so long influenced the music he makes today. When he was twenty years old he headed out to California to study music and that is how he learned to play guitar. He also began to write songs and dabble into stepping out onto a stage to sing.

After his stint at the "Guitar Institute of Technology," he returned to Texas and became guitarist for a hard rock band called Dangerous Toys. Although they released two albums Kevin wanted more so he started a band of his own named Thunderfoot. With every song that he wrote, he found that it centered around country music and not the southern rock that Thunderfoot was playing so he decided to get together with another band to play what he was destined to play - country music.

It didn't take him long to start landing regular gigs and playing for full houses and once his first album, One For The Road was released there was no looking back because he was definitely on his way. Just a short time after his first album was released, the colossal Beer, Bait and Ammo was released which contains the title track which has never gone out of style in honky tonks and on radio in the Lone Star State. Mark Chesnutt and Sammy Kershaw like the song so much that they perform it in their shows and Sammy has recorded it for one of his albums. Other hot tunes from that release are "100% Texan" (used in a Texas Dodge commercial) and "Speak of the Devil." Proving that Kevin could entertain like nobody's business, Live At Billy Bob's was released in 2002 as was High On The Hog, which instantly because popular because of singles like "The Lord Loves The Drinkin' Man," "Senorita Mas Fina," and "All The Tequila in Tijuana" (which has a special guest appearance by Willie Nelson).

There's no doubt that Kevin Fowler is 100% Texan, as well as 100% talented. He has the whole package - entertaining, great songs that he writes, and great guitar playing. The Kevin Fowler Band is a perfect compliment to each other and you can tell that they are good friends. All of those factors together means that any Fowler song you hear is going to sound great and make you want to dance, feel lonely along with him, or feel any other emotion contained in a tune of his.
