Jennifer's Texas Country

Dateline: June 2, 2003

Last month I spotlighted Kevin Fowler (who is making his rounds on Texas radio yet again); this month I will feature Adam Carroll, a funny singer/songwriter with a flair for writing subtle yet extremely humorous songs.

From the small town of Tyler, Texas, Adam didn't have much luck with the local music scene when he first began delving into the genre of country music, which is why he spent seven years in a junior college instead of becoming a writer. As a matter of fact, the music scene was practically non-existent as far as he could tell. The only good thing that

became of the scene there was that he learned of musicians and singer/songwriters like Terry Allen.

Terry Allen showed Adam that songs could be weird and true all at the same time and that hint of inspiration lingers on each and every album that Adam makes today. She often appears with him at his "Down-Home Song Swaps" show where songwriters get together and play each other's songs so that audiences can get a different feel for the music.

He has risen from the dreaded no-name status in the business, to opening for the likes of Todd Snider, Little Feat, Charlie Robison, and Lucinda Williams, who all have an immense appreciation for the music he performs and writes.

Adam's songs range from sounding bluesy to folksy and the lyrics are spread out into a wide array of topics. Some of the most frequent are love and outcasts which always make for a great country tune. With comparisons being made between Adam and legend John Prine, things can only be looking up for this Texas jewel.
