Jennifer's Texas Country

Dateline: August 5, 2002

Last month I spotlighted Cooder Graw (Born on the "Llano Estacado"); this month I will feature Jim Lauderdale, singer/songwriter extraordinaire. Though he was not born in Texas, he displays the unique abilities and skills that I have come to love and admire while listening to his song and verses.

Though he has had a bit of success as an individual performer, right now he is most recognized as a gifted and talented songwriter. He has written many hits for George Strait: "We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This," "What Do You Say To That," and "Don't Make Me Come Over There And Love You" among others.

The Dixie Chicks recorded "Hole In My Head," while Gary Allan took a stab at singing "What's On My Mind." Recently Danni Leigh has joined in to perform Lauderdale penned tunes like "House Of Pain" and "Sometimes."

His background vocals can be heard on Billy Ray Cyrus' "Southern Rain" album and Dale Watson's "Christmas Time in Texas." "Divide & Conquer" from Danni Leigh also features his true country sound in the accompanying vocals as does Charlie Robison's excellent "Step Right Up" release. The list of vocal appearances alone would take forever to name.

You would think that the talent would stop right at singing/writing country music alone, but not for Jim. He is also an accomplished bluegrass singer/songwriter, and has released two albums ("I Feel Like Singing Today" and "Lost In The Lonesome Pines"), both with Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. To make the switch from country to bluegrass, you might also think he changes his voice quite a bit just to sound more bluegrass, but he does not. There is no changing of the voice and amazingly it sounds just as good as it does singing country. Jim's latest release, "The Hummingbirds" offers the same ole Lauderdale sound and superb song lyrics as we have heard from him before. The album was also, suprisingly, written before "The Other Sessions," which was released in 2000.

There is no telling what Jim Lauderdale might delve into next, but I sure hope he is satisfied writing and playing country and bluegrass, because it sounds so good it has got to be what he was born to do.
