Jennifer's Texas Country

Dateline: November 4, 2002

Last month I spotlighted Robert Earl Keen (Whose road through the music business has lasted almost forever); this month I will feature Roger Creager, a deep-voiced singer with smarts to fall back on should he need to.

Creager is sort of a "newbie" to the Texas Country scene, really delving into music in 1997. Before that year, he had been slaving away in corporate America as an accountant - of all things. Having something to fall back on in case the music

business treated him wrong was one of the main things his folks taught him growing up.

Like any other artist, Texas or otherwise, gaining exposure and going through some rough times via touring and playing the honky-tonks was pretty much a requirement. Moving to College Station, Texas proved to be a smart move because of the genre's popularity with the younger generation. He continued to write songs and play those bars before hit first big hit "Everclear," a song about having a little fun and spiking some people drink's just to see the reaction.

His first album, 1998's "Having Fun All Wrong," contains local Texas favorites like "The Everclear Song" and "Fun All Wrong," while 2000's "I Got The Guns" has funny tune "Mother's A Redneck Too," "Rancho Grande," and a song with a bit of an attitude entitled "Love."

There is no doubt in my mind that Roger's career will only move up as the months and years progress because he has the total package. He is not afraid of failure therefore giving him a fearlessness that is all too lacking in most artists coming out of Nashville. Instead of worrying about albums and songs going to number one, he just continues doing the same thing, all the while his fan base continues to grow because they know he really cares about them instead of the money.
